2019 Council Election: Nominations Now Open!
Nominations are now open for the 2019 Council Election! Is it time to give back to your profession by putting your name forward?

New Law Passes to Protect Patients from Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct
Bill 21, An Act to Protect Patients, will strengthen protection for patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct by regulated health professionals in Alberta. The Alberta government introduced the legislation to ensure Albertans are safe when accessing health-care services.

Good Practice: When is it OK to Accept Gifts From Patients?
Although there are no rules that explicitly prohibit accepting gifts from patients, Physiotherapy Alberta cautions members that accepting gifts has the potential to negatively impact the therapeutic relationship. Accepting gifts carries some degree of risk of crossing the boundaries between the personal and the professional relationship.

Research in Focus: Cannabis and Cannabinoids for Chronic Noncancer Pain Conditions
Cannabis and cannabinoids have been suggested as potential treatments for the management of chronic noncancer pain conditions, as an alternative or an adjunct to other medications. This systematic review summarizes the available evidence for the effectiveness of cannabis and cannabinoids across a range of core outcomes.

Do. Learn. Grow. Continuing Competence Program
Physiotherapy Alberta launched its new physiotherapist Continuing Competence Program December 1, 2018. The new program, branded as DO. LEARN. GROW., gives physiotherapists choice and aligns with activities they do already to develop competencies - either through work or their own professional development path. The new program also allows physiotherapists to tell their learning and practice improvement stories their way.

Registrations cancelled October 1, 2018 either at the request of the member or by Physiotherapy Alberta when the member failed to renew their practice permit. List produced December 5, 2018.

Holiday Hours

Physiotherapy Alberta’s office will be closed December 24, 2018 and will re-open January 2, 2019.

Vitals are Vital

Dr. Severin will discuss why it’s essential that physiotherapists take baseline vital sign measurements, the related evidence and risks of not taking vital signs, and the APTA Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section’s ‘Vitals are Vital’ campaign.

He will present the case for why every physiotherapist needs to monitor vital signs, regardless of their practice setting or patient population.
