Roxbury's First TREP$ Marketplace a Huge Success
An exciting new kind of flea-market was on Wednesday evening at Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township. The 30 vendors had created and displayed very desirable products and services for the community to purchase. What made this flea market unique was that the vendors were all fourth graders. The kids, and the program in which they participated, are referred to as "TREP$", -short for "enTREPreneurS."
The marketplace opened with an official ribbon-cutting by all the fourth grade TREP$. The community came out in full support of this new program, helping the children achieve success. Success meant different things to different kids. For some, it was the independence of earning their own money, and for others, it was the skills they learned along the way.
These fourth-grade TREP$ talked about their ideas and their products during the hour-long Marketplace. For all the children, success came in the realization that they were now "entrepreneurs." This first experience taught them a little about what worked and didn't work so that their second experience will be even better. The event was the culmination of five weeks of hands-on, fun workshops that taught the participants about product development, finance, marketing, advertising, and sales. The workshops were well received by the students.
We were fortunate to bring this program to Roxbury this year thanks to grant funding from Sustainable Jersey for Schools and the NJEA.
Each of the four elementary schools, Franklin, Jefferson, Kennedy, and Nixon, were awarded a $2,000 grant from SJFS and the NJEA back in February 2019 for its proposals entitled, Roxbury Inspires Sustainable Entrepreneurs (R.I.S.E.), a sustainable business enrichment program for students. Family Night Out with Osmo
Roxbury Elementary School parents joined their children for an evening of exploration and innovation with Osmo on November 14th. Families from Franklin, Jefferson, Kennedy, and Nixon School were treated to a free dinner before being set free to play hands-on learning games in which players use objects in the real world to interact with the digital world shown on their screens and tablets.
Osmo is a unique combination of computer vision and manipulatives that change the way students interact with technology in the classroom and at home. It's a cross-curricular learning tool that allows for the integration of educational technology into any classroom and subject material.
Families rotated through the different games for close to two hours and left with a free 30-day Osmo sampler kit for iPad which included five hands-on learning games. Parents were also informed that Osmo kits and sets could be purchased online for iPads and Kindle devices ranging in grade levels and subject areas.
Franklin Elementary School is one of only four schools (or districts) in the country piloting a program as models for what Osmo implementation should look like in classrooms school-wide. For the 2019/2020 school year, Franklin staff will be participating in Osmo and how it should be used in the classroom.

Rox-THON Visits Goryeb Children's Hospital
Members of Rox-THON visited Goryeb Children's Hospital in Morristown, NJ on November 21st. Students and club advisors
had an opportunity to meet the personnel they'll be working with through their new partnership as well as took a tour of the facilities to see where their efforts would be going.
Rox-THON, formerly known as mini-THON at Roxbury High School is a club as well as an event. Rox-THON continues its work toward the same cause, curing pediatric cancer. A majority of this year's proceeds will now stay local. Donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital).
Roxbury High School will host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.

Parents Go to Kindergarten at Franklin School
Parents and some special friends went back to school Wednesday morning for a special presentation in Karen O'Krepky's Kindergarten class. Twenty-four parents and friends came to see all that goes on in an every day Kindergarten class condensed to about 30 minutes.
The special guests listened to Mrs. O'Krepky as she went through a few of the Kindergarten basics before going over to work with the 16 students who were quietly and patiently waiting for her.
The students showed how they lead in the flag salute each morning along with singing the National Anthem. They shared how they cover the days of the week, the calendar, number counting, and most importantly, the class rules.
They even showed how they get to move and shake while learning to say and spell their sight words or when they celebrate when a friend loses a tooth (even though only one friend has lost a tooth so far since school started). Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".
Google Expeditions Transports History Students to Louisiana
Roxbury High School students in Conor Devine's U.S. History I class took a virtual field trip last week to the Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana thanks to the use of Google Expedition goggles.
Google Expeditions provided a full tour of the Whitney Plantation in which students could put on Virtual Reality goggles and see a 360-degree view of the plantation fields, slave quarters, the "big house", and an original Antioch Baptist church.
Students were taken on this journey by co-teachers Caty Gluck and Kate Oster who narrated each of the scenes they were viewing through the googles and asked differentiated questions about specific aspects of each scene.
"Google Expeditions brought this topic to life for our students in a way that lecturing and reading could never do," said Devine.

Rox-THON gets their Flock on
Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.
Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.
"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo
s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.
If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury Ice Hockey Updates:
Roxbury Ice Hockey Wins Hat-Trick Sprinkled Season Opener - Dec 5
The Roxbury High School ice hockey team started its 2019/2020 season with a dominating 7-1 win over Sparta/Jefferson on Thursday.
Playing at Mennen Arena, Brian Westergaard started the scoring with the first goal of the season, with assists from Nick Hefferle and Joe DiDomenico.
The next two goals were scored by Joe Carey with assists from Kevin Keane. Nick Hefferle added a goal at the end of the first period, with assists from Brian Westergaard and Nick Thomas.
The second period saw Hefferle add two more goals for a hat trick, with Nick Thomas and Westergaard assisting on both.
The Gaels added their final goal in the third period, with Carey scoring his third of the game for a hat trick too, with assists from Ethan Barooah andThomas.
Ryan Callahan was fantastic in goal, stopping all 15 shots he faced. Although he was not credited with a shutout, due to an error by the referee, Callahan made that save on a shot in the third period. The referee blew the whistle, Ryan relaxed and then the puck trickled in. It was such an obvious error, that Roxbury's Coach Benbow picked up a bench minor penalty trying to explain his case in support of his goaltender.
Roxbury's next game is Saturday night, December 7 at 8 p.m. at Skylands Arena against Vernon. Click here to read this coverage from TAPinto Roxbury.
