"Forward-thinking" is not typically a characteristic ascribed to teenagers. They may think of decisions in the distant future - where they want to attend college, Orange Technical College, or military, whether they would like to have a family, where they want to raise their family, and what career they aspire to. And they may understand what's needed in the next week or two.
But how well do they understand "forward-thinking' as it relates to the 2-12 months range? Do they know that this semester's grades impact the ability to play sports in the spring, whether they will need credit recovery next summer, whether they will have good enough grades to even attend prom this spring?
It's a tough skill to learn. But one that families deal with constantly-especially looking at budgets; saving up for a home, a vacation, a new car, college tuition. So, let's take a moment this weekend to discuss how we view the next two weeks of school and how that "forward-thinking" skill could pay dividends for second semester and beyond.
Pictured very top and just below: Biology Lab. Mrs. Singh's students were working on a new microscope lab last Friday. In this lab they analyzed human cells taken from the inside of the mouth using a cotton swab. To do conduct the analysis, they needed glass slides and a methylene blue solution. Under high magnification, students could observe an individual cell's nucleus and any surrounding bacteria.

Mrs. Singh's Marine Science class has been working on individual six-page Ecology Foldables. Once completed, the project addressed food webs with at least 10 organisms from each student's design (above).

Valencia College Bridges to Success Scholarship
The Bridges to Success Scholarship application is currently available for Valencia College. This is a scholarship program that includes two years of classes and books paid for at Valencia College. Students that have already applied to Valencia College and received their Valencia ID number must create their Atlas account to access the application. The completed scholarship application deadline is January 24th, 2019.

Attention AEHS seniors and parents/guardians of seniors - two very important applications opened up back on October 1st. Both applications can help your senior earn scholarships and/or grants to help pay for college. Below is a brief description of each:
1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The FAFSA application will help some students qualify for up to $6,000.00 in Pell Grant (money from the Federal Government that does not need to be paid back) or additional institutional aid. You will need a copy of the parents/guardians 2017 taxes to complete this application. The Pell Grant is need-based; based on income so some families may or may not qualify. It is best for every family to complete the FAFSA as institutions may be able to provide additional institutional aid, need or merit based, if the FAFSA is on file -
** Students will need to create an FSA ID username and password prior to starting the FAFSA application. The FSA ID serves as an electronic signature in order to submit the FAFSA application via the website. Each senior should create his/her own FSA ID username and password as one or both parents/guardians should as well.
The FFAA must be completed in order for students to receive the Bright Futures scholarship as well as many other scholarships and grants the state of Florida may be able to offer. Students must complete this application as soon as possible and must continue to work on meeting all eligibility requirements for Bright Futures prior to the end of their senior year. Please understand there are other scholarships other than Bright Futures a student may qualify for even if they do not meet the requirements for Bright Futures.
University Behavioral Center Scholarship THIS SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNIZES ONE GRADUATING SENIOR FROM EACH OF THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES ($500 PER STUDENT): ~ SEMINOLE
~ ORANGE
~ OSCEOLA ~ BREVARD
THIS AWARD IS TO BE USED TO ASSIST THE STUDENT WITH HIS/HER COLLEGE EXPENSES.
REQUIREMENTS: APPLICANTS WILL BE JUDGED BASED ON A 750 WORD ESSAY ON HOW MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES HAVE AFFECTED THEIR LIVES AND HOW THEY PLAN ON HELPING OTHERS.
DEADLINE: COMPLETED APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN APRIL 1, 2019.
