MILLARD SHEETS RETURNS TO THE POMONA MALL

The Progress Gallery and
Arteco Partners, in cooperation with
Claremont Heritage, welcomes home recently acquired murals that were originally produced by the
Millard Sheets Studio in Claremont for the Buffums' Department Store that anchored the east end of the now famous Pomona Mall. The murals are paint on wood panels that depict the history of Pomona. In addition to the murals, other pieces produced by the Sheets Studio will be on display including mosaics and sculpture. Paintings by Millard Sheets will be included along with didactics produced by Claremont Heritage that tell the history of Pomona native Millard Sheets. A short film of compiled interviews with Millard Sheets and others will be shown on monitors within the exhibition. A small pop-up shop containing books, artwork, DVDs etc. relating to Millard Sheets and the artists he mentored will be open during the duration of the exhibition.
Exhibition will run through Saturday, January 1, 2019
Special Gallery hours for this exhibition: 3 - 8 pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or by appointment.

CLAREMONT HERITAGE RECEIVES GRANT AWARD FROM CALIFORNIA HUMANITIES - EVENT DRAWS OVER 400
CLAREMONT, CALIF. - California Humanities has announced the most recent round of Humanities For All Quick Grant awards. Claremont Heritage has been awarded $5,000 for its project entitled "Mexican Serenade Revisited: The Padua Hills Theatre and the Mexican Players".
Humanities For All Quick Grant is a competitive grant program of California Humanities that supports locally-initiated public humanities projects that respond to the needs and interests of Californians, encourage greater public participation in humanities programming, particularly by new and/or underserved audiences, and promotes understanding and empathy among all our state's peoples in order to cultivate a thriving democracy.
"Mexican Serenade Revisited" took place at the Padua Hills Theatre on December 5, 2018 - Over 400 people from around the Pomona Valley attended the event, including dozens of original Players (Paduanos) and their family members. A trailer (see below) was shown for a documentary film currently being produced by Claremont Heritage The initiative also includes an exhibition focusing on the history of the Padua Hills Theatre and Mexican Players and their impact on the Pomona Valley and beyond - the exhibition runs through December 21st at the Ginger Elliott Center at Garner House.

EXHIBITION - PRIMAL NATURE

Animals, both real and fantastic, occupied an important place in artistic expression in mid- twentieth-century Claremont, appearing in the work of ceramists, painters, enamelists, and sculptors.
Primal Nature: Animalia by Women in Post-War Claremont,
curated by Susan M. Anderson, focuses on this phenomenon, particularly in the work of women artists who played a vital role in the development of the arts in Claremont.
The exhibition, sponsored by Gould Asset Management LLC, will be on view September 21, 2018 through January 6, 2019 at the Claremont Museum of Art, located in the historic Claremont Depot at 200 W. First Street. The museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4:00 PM, and during Art Walk, the first Saturday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

The Claremont Museum of Art is pleased to partner with Claremont Heritage and Cathleen Ford Miner to present a lecture by curator and art historian Susan M. Anderson that focuses on the women artists featured in the Claremont Museum of Art's current exhibition. Join us on Saturday, January 5 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ginger Elliott Gallery for this informative talk followed by a reception. We invite you to visit the museum in the Depot to see the exhibition before the lecture or stop by after for Art Walk from 6 to 9 p.m.
Primal Nature: Animalia by Women in Post-War Claremont
examines how animals, both real and fantastic, occupied an important place in artistic expression in mid-twentieth century Claremont. On display through January 6, 2019, the exhibition features the art of women who were art faculty or students at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate School-Jean Goodwin Ames, Barbara Beretich, Betty Davenport Ford, Marjorie Burgeson, Susan Hertel, Martha Underwood, Nina De Creeft Ward-as well as other local artists-Dora de Larios, Ingrid Petersen, Hildred Reents and Ellamarie Wooley. The artists were selected not only for their work as ceramists, painters, enamelists and sculptors, but also for their contributions as educators, promoters and community-builders for the arts after World War II.
