Challenge 2: Do Something Nice for a Healthcare Worker
|
|
Nurses and other healthcare professionals need your help now more than ever. Nurses and healthcare workers everywhere are heading directly into the places that everyone else is trying to avoid — hospitals, urgent care facilities, and medical offices teeming with people who need care related to COVID-19. It’s more important than ever to support healthcare workers working on the front lines of COVID-19. Here are some ways that you can
#SupportHealthcareHeroes
and make a difference in the battle against COVID-19.
Here are some things you can do:
- Send art and encouraging messages to nurses and doctors to hang at their stations
- Sending $5 through Venmo or PayPal to a family member or friend who works on the frontline to buy a coffee on their way to work
- Call a local nursing unit to arrange takeout or delivery
- Help nurse and doctor parents with childcare
Our weekly challenges provide a way for you to stay involved with the community from home.

Learn: Healthcare Bias During COVID-19
|
|
|
COVID-19 may not discriminate based on race — but U.S. health care does
, Video from PBS
|
Health officials have stressed that novel coronavirus doesn’t discriminate based on race or ethnicity. But disparities long present in the U.S. medical system are now driving what some call a crisis within a crisis: black and brown communities across the country are being hit harder, and with fewer resources to save them. Amna Nawaz talks to Dr. Uché Blackstock of Advancing Health Equity.

The Coronavirus Doesn't Discriminate, But U.S. Health Care Showing Familiar Biases, NPR
|
The new coronavirus doesn't discriminate. But physicians in public health and on the front lines say that in the response to the pandemic, they can already see the emergence of familiar patterns of racial and economic bias.

"In this position, my eyes have been opened to many social determinants of health, I have seen and understood the importance of the “whole-person” approach, and I have learned how to appropriately earn the trust and engage in conversation with those in a very vulnerable position."

Arrupe Fundraising for the Cleveland Food Bank
|
|
The Arrupe Students in
AR150 Hunger and Poverty Advocacy
class have started a virtual fundraising campaign though the
Greater Cleveland Food Bank
as a substitute project for what they had hoped to do on campus. Join the Food Bank in supporting those whose ability to work has been or will be impacted by the pandemic.
Arrupe Scholars have joined the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to fight against hunger by starting a Virtual Food Drive! You can help them reach their fundraising goal by donating to their page and sharing our information with family and friends. All Bluestreaks, past and present, along with their family, friends, and others in their social networks are challenged to consider donating $1, $2, $5, $10 or more to this cause.
$1 buys 4 meal ordinarily, but because of a generous matching gift to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, it effectively buys 8 meals.

Fun Fact!
I play the trombone in the music ensembles on campus!

Our #MYSERVICESTORY for the week comes from Lilian Lebednick, a junior
upply Chain Management major and Psychology and PJHR minor
from Farmington Hills, MI!
At which service sites / community partners have you served or been a student liaison?
I have served at Fatima Family Center, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry Men's Shelter, St. Martin de Porres High School.
"At Saturday Tutoring, I worked with an 8th grader on his math workbook and weekly essay. We slowly worked our way through linear equations and writing about his love of sports (the latter being easier to follow.) We talked for a while about what he wanted to do college and careerwise. He wants to go to a big sports school and work as a basketball player's agent. He truly cares about school and its refreshing to see a student who is passionate to learn."

|
Each week
we feature stories of students who have made service a cornerstone of their JCU experience. Complete the form below to show us how you
#ServeCLE!
We’ll share your story
on social media and in our weekly e-newsletter. If you’re a CSSA student liaison, you’ll earn points for your mentor group!
