FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
|
|
Earlier this week, I shared some data with staff about how LCHS compares with other area schools in attendance and course progress.
We currently enjoy the lowest chronic absentee rate in the district – and for this, I give all the credit to our amazing teachers who continually make students feel welcome, seen, valued and worthy of best effort.
But even though our rate is the lowest, it is still too high with one in four students absent more than ten percent of the time.
We also currently enjoy the highest pass rate in the district – again, all hail to the LC teaching staff who leaves no stone unturned when it comes to offering student supports for learning.
But even though our rate is the highest, it is still too low with (again) one in four courses being taken currently at a failing grade. (My hope is very much that our trend will uptick quite a bit in this regard when final grades for the semester are out; a LOT of students put on the afterburners the week of finals to get in missing work and to make sure they pass last assessments. I’ll keep you posted.)
For the past three years, our student services team (counselors and administrators) and our Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS) team members (intervention specialists, community partners, Special Ed leaders and others) have really focused on increasing our school attendance and pass rates, and we’ve done a bang-on job with the work. We’ve analyzed our student data and come up with an incredibly impressive array of mentorship opportunities for students, tutoring supports, intervention options related to social/emotional growth as well as academic assistance.
We get stuck, though, when looking at our students at that highest tier of concern.
We have students who live in soups of trauma and despair and disengagement and isolation and under-service by the institutions around them.
They need Big Help and our current menu of services just isn’t enough to sustain their academic and social success during their four years.
So what do we do?
We keep at it.
We bring more targeted training to our teachers, our front line crew, so that they can better forge healthy connections with disenfranchised and vulnerable kids.
We get more and more creative with the resources we do have and keep our eyes and ears and hearts open for better ideas for our students.
And we try to get more.
We know that we need a Substance Specialist here full-time. We need more access to mental health therapists for students. I’d love a couple on-site social workers for kids. My heart soars at the idea of an attendance specialist who could work with families to reduce barriers to attending.
It’s not enough anymore to teach content.
We teach the whole child – and serve the whole child.
That’s our focus.

Good News:
The
Spokane League of Women Voters
visited LC during lunch last week and registered 29 students to vote in future elections (in addition to 196 before Winter Break). The Washington Youth Voter Registration Law established that 16 and 17-year old can be pre-registered to vote so that once they turn 18, their ballots will automatically be ready for them. If you didn't get a chance to register, go to the Public or Student Office to get information on how to register.

New LC Club "Girls Go CyberStart":
Girls Go CyberStart (GGCS) is a new Lewis and Clark club that is a fun, free and interactive online program composed of digital challenges to introduce high school girls to cybersecurity. With GGCS, students can explore exciting career opportunities in the field, join the global cybersecurity community, and learn the techniques they need to keep our country safe online.
The program is a response to the fact that there is a huge shortage of cybersecurity experts in the United States. Teaching high school students through exciting digital challenges, we are on a mission to encourage girls to work together and support each other’s skills, so that they can protect their country. No prior experience in computer science or cyber security is necessary. The club meets
Tuesdays after school in room 013 from 2:30-4:30pm
. For more information, see Mr. Wrixon in room 013 or email him at
hoganw@spokaneschools.org
and visit the web site at:

Tiger Fund Scholarship:
The Lewis & Clark Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the LC Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Two scholarships for $1,000 are available from the 2020 LC Tiger Fund Scholarship fund. You can download the application
here
. Here are criteria for the scholarship selection:
- Applicants must be a LC Senior graduating in 2020.
- Must have a verifiable financial need that would make it difficult to pursue a college or university education without monetary assistance.
- Must have had a personal life challenge/difficulty that they have overcome.
- Must have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.49.

Penny Drive:
Did you know that approximately 450 children are born each year with a disability in Spokane County? Help has been there because of people like you who care enough to help. For over 50 years, the Spokane Guilds' School, a non-profit organization and now known as
Joya
, has helped children birth to age 3, with a variety of syndromes or developmental delays by providing physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapies. The
LC Tiger Depot Student Store
is having their
Annual Penny Drive
where we encourage all Tigers to participate in supporting Joya. Donations will be taken anytime from now to
February 7
. You can find "Kids for Kids" collection jugs at any of the offices, tiger stores, and 2nd period classes. You can give your son/daughter a donation to turn in or even put a personal donation in Lisa Underhill's mailbox here at the school in the main office. Last year we were able to give over $3,300 and we would love to surpass that amount this year. Please help us support this great cause!

2nd Semester:
Second semester begins
Monday, January 27
. Students will get a copy of their schedule for spring semester this Tuesday. For most students, the semester change does not bring any changes to their schedule. If students want to make a change, they can see their counselor. Most of the changes that will be processed are for elective changes (there are only a few elective classes that allow new students at the semester as most electives are full year and require the first semester knowledge in order to be success in second semester). Due to very full classes, we are not making teacher change requests.
|
|
Fall Registration:
As second semester begins, we also begin the process of registering for the 2020-2021 school year! In Seminar on January 14, students will get an overview of their class choices for core and elective classes. Then on
January 29 (11th), 30 (10th), and 31 (9th)
, students will go to the library and register for classes online in PowerSchool. These course selections are just in draft form and there will be time throughout the spring and summer for students to make adjustments. As soon as the system allows, we'll also open up the courses to be viewed in PowerSchool so students can see how their schedule is being generated. Please know that we make changes up until the last minute before school begins, so periods and teachers will change many times as we balance classes and adjust the master schedule. Due to the complexity of the master schedule and the limitations of PowerSchool, we cannot promise specific teachers or periods. Please email Theresa if you have any questions:
