The Readings for this Sunday
A Reminder
The Lectionary Cycle
The Lectionary in the BCP and other contemporary lectionaries use a three-year cycle, referred to as Years A, B, and C. Year A begins on the First Sunday in Advent in years evenly divisible by three (e.g., 2001). […] In the eucharistic lectionary the Gospel According to Matthew is read in Year A, Mark in Year B, and Luke in Year C. The Gospel According to John is used during Lent and Easter, and on some Sundays in Year B, since Mark is shorter than the other gospels.
Glossary of Episcopal Terms
In our Hebrew scripture reading the prophet promises that, as the day of the Lord’s judgment nears, God’s messenger will be sent to make ready the Lord’s way. The priests and temple servants, who say they are waiting for the Lord, need cleansing and purifying most of all. Suddenly the refiner will come to the temple, and then the offering of the people will be pleasing to the Lord. On this day Christians recognize that, with the bringing of the child Jesus to the temple, the time of purifying judgment has begun.
A song of thanksgiving and prophecy. The child will be called the prophet of the Most High and will make a way for the Lord.
In this lesson Paul greets the new disciples in the town of Philippi, gives thanks for their sharing in the gospel, and prays that they may be found without fault on the judgment day of Christ. It is likely that this message of affection and appreciative joy was written toward the latter part of Paul’s ministry, perhaps while he was in prison. He expresses great confidence that the work of grace begun by God in his converts will be brought to fruition.
The Gospel of Luke sets the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist in the context of its time in history. It was customary during this era to date events with reference to the lives of rulers and well-known public figures. Within this history the word of God comes to John as he preaches his baptism of repentance. His ministry is in fulfillment of the words of Isaiah concerning the one who prepares the way of the Lord.
ADVENT
The first season of the church year, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continuing through the day before Christmas. The name is derived from a Latin word for "coming." The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of our Lord's nativity, and for the final coming of Christ "in power and glory."
Glossary of Episcopal Terms
ADVENT WREATH
A circle of greenery, marked by four candles that represent the four Sundays of the season of Advent. An additional candle is lit as each new Sunday is celebrated in Advent. Advent wreaths are used both in churches and in homes for devotional purposes. The candles may be blue, purple, or lavender, depending on local custom. Some Advent wreaths include a white candle in the center known as the "Christ Candle," which is lit on Christmas Eve.

Collect for Sunday
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen. ~BCP 211
For those to be ordained
Almighty God, the giver of all good gifts, in your divine providence you have appointed various orders in your Church: Give your grace, we humbly pray, to Patricia, and to all who are now called to any office and ministry for your people; and so fill Patricia with the truth of your doctrine and clothe her with holiness of life, that she may faithfully serve before you, to the glory of your great Name and for the benefit of your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. ~BCP 256 adapted
A Prayer for a Bishop Search
O God, we ask you to bring us your next faithful servant to minister to the people of Southern California and Yuma, Arizona as we work to bring healing and peace through a commitment to justice, a desire to grow deeper relationships with Christ and one another, and a foundation of respecting the dignity of all. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be the fulfillment of this prayer. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek you [God] here may find you, and be filled with your joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
