NEA Opens 2020 Competition for Grants for Arts Projects (formerly Artworks)  
 
This is the federal grant program that historically has given the largest number of grants to public television and radio every year.  These grants range $10,000 - $100,000, and grantees leverage these many times over.
  • Read more on the Grant Center profile page, including archived presentations and resources created by NEA staff for public media applicants, and contact information for key staff to talk to about your project.
  • The two deadlines this year are February 13 and July 9, 2020.  Read the guidelines carefully and consult with staff if necessary to determine which competition is the best fit for your work.
  • The latest round of grants was announced last week and includes a $25,000 award for Grant Center member UNC-TV's series, Reel South. Congratulations!

CPB Opens Competition for New Ready To Learn Station Grants, Announces Four New Station Grantees for American Graduate
 
If you are a Ready To Learn station, be sure to have a close look at the new opportunities with a deadline of January 31, 2020.
  • Ready To Learn Station Training and Implementation Grants will provide for Ready To Learn training of two staff members in Washington, D.C. in May 2020, as well as implementation activities. Total funding of $375,000 will be divided between as many as 25 stations.
  • In the Ready To Learn Mentor Station Grants, CPB will contract with up to six public television stations to mentor stations receiving RTL Station Training & Implementation Grants in Spring 2020. Up to $72,000 per station is available.
CPB has awarded four stations almost $950,000 to develop educational media for grade school through university, as part of the American Graduate initiative.  A special congratulations to the two members of the Grant Center: Iowa PBS and WHYY. The projects are:
  •  $193,065 to Iowa PBS for a project with teachers to curate a collection of user-generated science content for use in classrooms.
  • $207,032 to WHYY in Philadelphia for Pathway to Careers, which will create a training program to help 80 students improve media skills and learn how to become freelancers.
  • $246,863 to WKU Public Broadcasting in Bowling Green, Ky., for "Embracing Differences, Finding Strengths: A Public Broadcasting Model for Autism Inclusion." The station partnered with Western Kentucky University to establish a program that will will help autistic students publish content for public media. The project is meant to help promote neurodiversity in the workforce.
  • $300,000 to Connecticut Public received for Thinkalong, a project that aims to expand the use of interactive public media. The web-based learning tool will help middle schoolers build debate literacy and critical thinking skills.
     
NEH Announces $30.9 Million for 188 Humanities Projects Nationwide 
 
This round of awards does not include Public Programs grants or Digital Humanities, which give the most grants to public media, but it is worth noting two grants to media organizations here.

Both of these awards are made from grant programs with an upcoming deadline of May 15, 2020. New grant guidelines are expected in March 2020.

  • Report for America, launched in 2018 with funding from the Google News Initiative, the Lenfest Journalism Initiative, and others announces the local newsrooms selected to host journalists in 2020-2021. The program will provide more than $5 million in direct support to fund 250 positions at  164 operations across 46 states, including nine daily newspapers, 39 digital-only sites, 39 public radio stations, 12 local television stations and five non-daily papers. Nonprofit newsrooms account for 47 percent of the recipients. Read more here.

  • The American Journalism Project announced their first 11 grants, nine months into an initiative, led by a $20 million commitment from Knight Foundation to create a new venture philanthropy organization dedicated to local news. All grants in this round of funding have been awarded to organizations described as CNOs or civic news organizations. The Grant Center's ongoing conversations with AJP reveal an interest in their part in public broadcasting, especially in meeting the needs of underserved communities in "news deserts", however no grant opportunities for stations have yet been announced. The next phase of their work will focus on supporting the hiring of development professionals in the identified CNOs and studying best practices for fundraising. Computer Science for All - NSF will make awards of up to $2 million to projects that provide students with access to computer science education at the preK-12 level. Deadline: February 11, 2020.
 
Grants for Arts Projects - The NEA Grants for Arts Projects (formerly Art Works) program supports creation, engagement, learning and livability in communities through grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. (1-1 match required). Deadlines are February 13, 2020 and July 9, 2020.  
 
Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities - NEH awards up to $250,000 to host workshops on the digital humanities to increase the number of humanities scholars using digital technology in their teaching. Deadline: March 5, 2020.   
 
Higher Education Challenge Grants Program - USDA will award $4.5 million across projects aimed at improving education at the postsecondary level to strengthen the nation's food and agricultural workforce. Deadline: March 23, 2020.  
 
NEA Research Labs - NEA will award cooperative agreements of up to $150,000 with a 1-1 match. Awards support research that investigates the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components of the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or with other domains of American life. This would be a good opportunity to discuss with university partners. Deadline: March 30, 2020 
   
Challenge America Fast Track - The goal of this $10,000 NEA program is to support small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the arts to underserved populations. Deadline: April 9, 2020. 
   
Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grants - This new grant program from NEH will award up to $750,000 for humanities institutions with long-term infrastructure needs and capacity building core activities. Matching funds are required. Deadline: May 15, 2020.  
 
Research and Development Grant - The NEH will grant up to $350,000 to address challenges in preserving or providing access to humanities resources. Deadline: May 15, 2020.  
 
Preservation and Access Education and Training Grants - This NEH program preserves and establishes access to cultural heritage resources including books, sound recordings, electronic records and digital objects. Deadline: May 15, 2020. 
 
Digital Projects for the Public - NEH's Digital Projects for the Public grants make awards of up to $400,000 for production grants. The next deadline is June 19, 2020, with new guidelines expected mid-April. 
 
Bay-Watershed Education and Training Program - The Bay-Watershed Education and Training program from NOAA provides funding for locally relevant experiential environmental education. The California, Gulf of Mexico and Hawaii programs are currently open. Program details and deadlines vary regionally.  
Foundation Funding  

Members of the Grant Center for Public Media can access hundreds of foundations that fund public media through the GC Search tool. Additionally, some foundations run limited grant competitions around priority areas for public media.   • The Dollar General Foundation will provide grants of up to $10,000 to nonprofits located within 15 miles of a Dollar General store for direct services to adults with literacy needs. Deadline: February 20, 2020. 
  • PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs have extended the deadline for grants to support youth engagement events around the 2020 election, the Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood is looking for nationally scalable projects and Blue Ridge PBS received a $2 million grant. (January 8, 2020)
  • Multiple journalism mini-grants and opportunities for production funding, along with journalism funding news and ideas for corporate funding. (December 13, 2020)
