Henderson County Youth Council Collecting School Supplies and Food Items Through End of Year

The Henderson County Youth Council is collecting new school supplies and non-perishable food items for a Holiday ReStocking Drive for their fellow classmates in need. They will be collecting these items through the end of the year and then distributing them in January. Items most needed are notebook paper (college-ruled), notebooks, pens, pencils, binders, folders, and non-perishable food items.

If you would like to help restock a student's backpack or pantry this year, please drop your items off at the UWHC Offices, 32 Smyth Ave (at the Kimberly-Clark plant) before December 20. Our normal office hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Please contact Adrienne Pomeroy at [email protected] with any questions or call 828.692.1636.

Focus On...The Storehouse

The Storehouse is a food and hygiene pantry dedicated to feeding the hungry in Henderson County. They provide an assortment of dry groceries as well as cleaning, hygiene, personal care items and some over-the-counter medications which are not covered by food stamps. The food program currently feeds 225-250 families per month.

The Storehouse continues to receive new referrals from other agencies in the community, and serves people and families of all age ranges.

This season, The Storehouse is working to provide holiday gifts to children in need in Henderson County through their Blessings in Boxes program.

When you donate to United Way, you are making life better for Connie and her son

Your gift to United Way has the power to affect thousands of lives in Henderson County. Including those who benefit from Safelight, one of our 19 funded partners.

Connie fled to Safelight's emergency shelter with her four year old son after her abuser found her at another safe house.
Safelight provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in Henderson County. Their emergency shelter is more than a safe place to stay. It's a place where survivors can get the support they need to create a real second chance, an opportunity to redesign and better their lives.

At Safelight, Connie and her son were immediately connected to medical care and counseling. Shelter staff soon noticed that Connie's son was not functioning at a typical level for his age, and they helped get him assessed for developmental delays. Connie has expressed gratitude that staff caught the issue. The resulting early interventions will help both Connie and her son to be successful in their new chapter. Connie has now found employment and appropriate child care for her son, and she is ready to take the next step of finding a new home for them.

Please consider making a gift today so that we can continue to fight for the health, education, financial stability and basic needs of every person in Henderson County.
2-1-1: Hope When You Need it Most

When the first cold blast of the season hit, Steve wasn't sure how he would pay for the propane he needed to heat his home and keep his family warm. He reached out to 211 to see if there was a resource that could help the family. The 211 call specialist was able to connect Steve to a community organization that was able to provide the short term supply of the propane the family needed. Additionally, the specialist told Steve about the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) and how he could apply for the funds he might need to keep his family warm in the coming months. Steve was grateful for the information provided by the 211 call center team.

211 is committed to being the first, most essential resource to anyone who needs help. Call 211 or visit  www.nc211.org  for more information and to connect with local resources who can help.
