December 9, 2018 - Advent 2
In Earnest
It’s beginning to look a lot like Advent – I think that’s the way the song goes! Last Sunday we heard about the Son of Man coming in a cloud. We are about to get reacquainted with John the Baptizer – the voice crying out in the wilderness. And the wonderful hymns you won’t hear blaring out in the shopping mall. Makes you glad to be an Episcopalian!

I get energized by the season of Advent. I confess I have never looked at it as a penitential season, but I do see it as a time to get ready. And at All Saints we have much to get ready for. There’s the gifts and the pageant, there’s the cards and the services, there’s the lights and the Star that outshines all stars. I know it brings back tender memories for all – some more than others. Try not to let old wounds and hurts rob you of the anticipation that God is doing a new thing. Even in your life.

Please read this Weekly Update for details of coming attractions. We try our best to be open and inviting. Take advantage of what is set out for your enjoyment and benefit. Lots of folks are involved in trying to offer full and joy filled worship. But their gift to you only has meaning if you embrace it!

The Adult Forum series on the Eucharist has come to an end. We had fun providing this opportunity and hope you found something of value. If you weren't able to join us or want to listen to the series again, you can do that HERE . Your clergy staff will be at “coffee hour” this Sunday at 10:15 a.m. in the parish hall to answer any questions you might have and simply to mingle a bit in one another’s company. And - we have a special visitor on Sunday, December 16 – so watch for that.

Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Advent and the advent of a new day at All Saints. The party won’t be complete without you and your enthusiastic welcome of the new day.

See you in church!

Fr. Ernie

The Choral Scholars and Section Leaders will sing at the 9:00 a.m. service and the St. Gregory Choir will sing at the 11:15 a.m. service. They will be singing How Lovely are the Messengers by Felix Mendelssohn and Thou Shalt Know Him When He Comes by Mark Sirrett.

ANTHEM STORY -
HOW LOVELY ARE THE MESSENGERS
Due to its length (over 2 hours) and the mighty musical forces required to stage Felix Mendelssohn’s great oratorio “Saint Paul,” it is seldom presented in its entirety today. But even small slices reveal the composer’s prodigious talents. Sunday’s choir anthem “How Lovely Are the Messengers” is one of 20 choruses from “Saint Paul” (1836), which recalls the Apostle’s missionary journeys to spread the Gospel “to all the nations.” The text, from Romans 10, celebrates the faithful messengers “who preach us the Gospel of peace.”
