President's Message

Looking Forward to 2019!

2019 is fast approaching! The AARV has had a very productive 2018, and I'd like to recap some of our 2018 accomplishments and thank the AARV Board of Directors, our sponsors, and of course our members for making 2018 so successful.

Grants
This year we increased the number of our grants to FOUR, three of which were already awarded. We had two $2,500 research grants (one sponsored by Purina and the second by the AARV), and winners will present their work at VMX 2020. We also had a new grant sponsored by Royal Canin for a case study to be presented by a veterinary student at the upcoming VMX in 2019. And lastly, we have yet to announce the winner of our newest and largest grant of $5,000 that will go to an ACVSMR alternative track resident.

Conferences
We had a large presence at three conferences this year - VMX, AVMA and the World Summit - and we hope to add two more in 2019. We will be at Western Veterinary Conference (WVC) in Las Vegas as well as the SAVMA Symposium at the University of Georgia. Stay tuned for information on our upcoming Instagram competition for a student member to win a scholarship to attend the SAVMA Symposium!

Membership numbers
Our membership continues to grow. As of the end of November, we have 563 total members and 152 of those are new members for 2018. The new members include 49 veterinarians, 4 interns/residents, 17 technicians, 7 allied health professionals and 75 students. A huge thanks to our newest members for joining this year. We're happy to have you along for the ride.

Articles of Interest database
Lastly, we have been working hard on our Articles of Interest and we plan on rolling out a searchable database shortly. Please stay tuned for more details!

Our first order of business for 2019 will be the VMX conference. Please make sure to attend the AARV lecture track as well as the annual lunch membership meeting. At the membership meeting, there will be raffle prizes, updates about our 2019 goals and our student member grant contest winner will present her case study. Please don't forget to stop by our booth as well.

Also, in January 2019 Dr. Amber Ihrke will be taking over the reins as president. Please help me welcome her. The board of directors is looking forward to an exciting, productive 2019. We wish all of our members a happy, healthy holiday season and as always, please contact the AARV board if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

Regards,

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Member Spotlight: Sandy Gregory, M. Ed, RVT, CCRA

We'd like to introduce Sandy Gregory, AARV's new Technician Liaison, who will be joining the Board of Directors in January.

Animal Physical Rehabilitation - The Most Rewarding Jobs as an RVT!

Sandy Gregory
Sandy Gregory and Daisy during a physical rehabilitation visit.
Sandy Gregory is a rehabilitation therapist at Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland, California. She graduated with a master's of education in exercise science in 1994, and then earned an associate's degree in veterinary technology in 2001. Since 2001, Sandy has traveled through the United States working with various animal species including Hawaiian monk seals, gorillas in Texas, and marine mammals and birds in Alaska. She also shares a passion for small animals including rabbits, rodents, exotics, reptiles, large animals, and, of course, dogs and cats.

Ms. Gregory became certified through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute as a Canine Rehabilitation Assistant (CCRA) and has been in the field since 2004. She was awarded Student Chapter NAVTA Advisor of the Year in 2012 and California Veterinary Technician of the Year in 2014. She currently holds position of secretary for the California RVT Association, is a member of the AARV, and is a candidate member with the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians.

Although Sandy loves everything she does in the veterinary industry, the most rewarding area is animal physical rehabilitation. The ability to change the lives of patients and their owners through rehabilitative therapies and techniques remains unparalleled in Sandy's mind. Many patients are eager to walk through the door of a rehabilitation center because they know they will leave feeling better, which also helps to strengthen the human-animal bond. The daily greetings of wagging tails, kisses and enthusiastic barking from all of her different patients adds up to a job that doesn't feel like work. It is an opportunity to be creative, build bonds, be challenged, and restore animals to a healthy way of life.

Sandy is excited for the opportunity to represent the technician associate members of the AARV and looks forward to continuing the development of a wonderful network of like-minded colleagues. Finally, a huge thank-you goes out to Ms. Dawn Hickey as the exiting technician board member.

Sandy can be reached at [email protected].
