Welcome

Dear ,

First off, here's hoping you are happy, healthy, safe and, most importantly, still sane. Kathy and I and our families are all well and we are adjusting day-by-day. To use a couple of the most overused clichés known to man these days, we are all in this together and sailing unchartered waters with no navigational aids!

front-door-sm.jpg
How's the market, you ask? For the first time in my 20 years as a REALTOR® I have to admit that I just don't know. I am hoping that it will be robust and active as we enter the next phase of our "new normal." The early part of 2020 started off with an uptick in activity over last year at the same time and, despite a lack of inventory in all price-ranges, t
he local real estate market was looking healthy and we were hoping for a strong spring and summer. That being said, this recent turn of events may change things. Let's hope it is changed for the better!

Vermont's Governor Phil Scott ordered Vermonters to Stay Home/Stay Safe and the business of real estate was deemed "not essential." This is not an ideal situation for any of us, but Vermonters are resilient, practical and creative, and I know our communities will weather this storm and the challenges ahead of us.

I expect the market will be quite busy when this is over. Until then, take good care of yourselves and your loved ones, #StayHome and remember to breathe, smile, laugh and find joy in the little things.

Local Businesses Offer Take-Out and Curbside Pick-Up

Right now, it is so important for all of us to support our local stores and restaurants. Just Neighbors has compiled this information on local business's change of procedures and special offerings. If you are not comfortable going into a store, you will find that the smaller stores have plenty of fresh food and will have your order ready and brought out to your car. Many places have become very creative during this difficult time. If they are allowed to be open, they are really trying hard to make it work. They need our support!!! Please spread the word on the importance of keeping our town going!

Jobless Claims = Food Insecurity

food_drive_girl.jpg
Jobless claims and food assistance needs go hand-in-hand. With new jobless claims hitting a record high by early April 2020, more and more Americans are out of work. So many jobs here in Vermont revolve around seasonal work and activities that have not been classified as essential, and Vermont has been hard hit.

The Neighbors Pantry serves the greater Londonderry/Weston/Peru/Landgrove/Windham area and donations are critical right now. They are serving more hungry Vermonters than ever before, and have increased their food distribution from once monthly to bi-weekly to meet demand.

If you're able, please send a donation ($) to: Neighbors Pantry, PO Box 77, Londonderry, VT 05148.

Quarantine Cocktails
Good for your immune health and your sanity!

The Vodka Quarantini
  • 2 ounces of vodka (I like i.e.,Tito's)
  • 1 ounce Ocean Spray 100% Cranberry Juice
  • 1 ounce Fever Tree Ginger Beer (or ginger ale if not available)
Fill a standard martini glass with 4-5 ice cubes and fill to brim with cold water. Set aside. In a standard martini shaker with strainer, add vodka and cranberry juice and several ice cubes. Empty the ice and water from your glass and after shaking your drink vigorously, pour into glass and top with ginger beer. Enjoy.

Cheers my friends!
The "We're Screwed" Driver
  • 2-3 ounces of vodka
  • 1 Tangerine Emergen-C tablet or powder packet (or similar citrus-flavored "immunity booster")
  • Fresh-squeezed (or bottled) orange juice
Using a standard hi-ball cocktail glass, with your desired amount of vodka, add the Emergen-C and let sit and then stir until completely dissolved. Fill class with ice cubes and top to brim with orange juice. Stir, drink, and enjoy this immunity-boosting cocktail!

and, finally . . .

The Isolationist (No Mixers/No Mixing)
  • 3 ounces of your favorite spirit - Bulleit bourbon, Grey Goose vodka, Jamesons, Johnny Walker...
  • Ice
Fill class of choice with ice and top with your beverage of choice.

Upcoming Local Events

This month, instead of a calendar of local events, we are sharing information about some of the many inventive, creative, and engaging online activities that are flooding our news feeds. With thanks to friends near and far for great ideas and the Floodbrook School for a comprehensive list of child-friendly offerings.

Online Activities and Events

Weston's Wilder Memorial Library
Weston's amazing Wilder Memorial Library has a whole host of online programming these days, thanks to new librarians Jessica Clapp and Christine Mix. Using mostly Zoom, they have a variety of offerings ranging from singalongs to storytime to yoga, and there is surely something for everyone. See their website here. Sign up for their mailing list for regular updates.

Lady Gaga and Jimmy Fallon Concert
Pop music fans rejoice! Some of the world's biggest stars are gathering for a virtual concert in celebration and support of healthcare workers. Powered by commitments from supporters and corporate partners in benefit of the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, the broadcast will also benefit local and regional charities that provide food, shelter, and healthcare to those that need help most. The One World: Together At Home will be broadcast live on Saturday, April 18th 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC, NBC, ViacomCBS Networks, iHeartMedia, Bell Media, as well as streamed online on multiple global platforms. Information here.

Bakers and Wanna-Be Bakers Take Note
Vermont's own King Arthur Flour is hosting The Isolation Baking show live-streaming or on demand. Take advantage of expert guidance to finally get comfortable with baking breads, sweets and more. They also have a ton of tutorials on their website here.

Reading Rainbow (for all ages)
How great is this?!?! The incredible and iconic LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow are back with Mr. Burton live-streaming read-aloud stories for children, young adults and adults! Children's stories at 12 noon EST, YA at 3pm EST and adults at 9pm EST. https://levarburton.com/

Museums of the World
We are all armchair travelers these days. MSN's article on visiting 12 of the world's coolest museums went viral earlier this year. From the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (dinosaurs to butterflies to gems and more), to the Louvre in Paris, to NASA's own collection of cosmic beauty. Read the article and visit the museums here.

Activities for Green Thumbs
Gardeners who want to take the opportunity to work on their properties, plan and plant gardens or just learn more will appreciate the University of Vermont Extension Service's Master Gardening information at: https://www.uvm.edu/extension/mastergardener/gardening-during-covid-19.

Hug a Tree!
And, throughout May and June, Vermont's Urban & Community Forestry program is the Vermont Backyard Woods Course, a self-paced online "class" designed for homeowners with less than 25 acres who want to learn more about the woods in their backyard: what's in it, who (wildlife) uses it, and how they can become better caretakers of it. Information online here.

Historic Videos and Movies Galore
Did you know that the Library of Congress has their entire video collection online and available for viewing? I certainly didn't! From a new York Times story on the subject, "The biggest library in the world, it has an extraordinary trove of online offerings - more than 7,000 videos - that includes hundreds of old (and really old) movies. With one click, you can watch Buffalo Bill's Wild West show parade down Fifth Avenue in 1902; click again to giggle at Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse in a 1916 cartoon. And while the library is temporarily closed to the public, its virtual doors remain open."

The 7th Inning Stretch
Boston Red Sox fans will cheer with the news that the team's organist is offering an online concert every afternoon at 3 PM. Visit the 7th Inning Stretch's Facebook page (click here) for more information.

Feeding Time at the Zoo
For animal lovers, there is a small town in northern New Jersey that is hosting a Facebook Live animal visit with a different animal every day at 12:30. Visit Space Farms on Facebook.

Bedtime Stories (Fridays)
Everyone's favorite country music legendette (Dolly Parton!!) is reading bedtime stories at 7pm on Fridays. Although geared towards young children, I think everyone will appreciate her lovely charm and wonderful interpretations! Available on YouTube via a link from her Imagination Library site: https://imaginationlibrary.com/goodnight-with-dolly/

Date Night on Broadway
Friday night is Date Night! And, now that you've gotten the children to be (see above), it's your turn to chill out. Andrew Lloyd Webber, the genius behind many of Broadway's' biggest musicals is offering a free streaming view of his shows on Fridays. They are available on his YouTube channel "The Shows Must Go On!" If you'd like to tune in and enjoy the music, you can find the videos on Andrew Lloyd Webber's Facebook pageInstagram account, and Twitter account.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My
More for animal lovers: there are lots of live-streaming animal cams out there and here are a few to sample and enjoy.
