Researcher Spotlight
Chad Abresch,
University of Nebraska Medical Center
Chad Abresch is an assistant professor in the division of child health policy and vice chair of culture in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
He also serves as the executive director of CityMatCH, a national membership organization of city and county health departments’ maternal and child health programs representing urban communities in the U.S.
What is the future direction for your early childhood research?
"I’m interested in health inequities and drivers of these inequities. My research focuses especially on the social determinants of health and the emotional labor involved in race and health equity."
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on?
"We’re planning to undertake Perinatal Periods of Risk analyses in Douglas County, Nebraska, and three other Midwest communities with rates of non-Hispanic Black infant mortality."
Why is early childhood research important?
"A focus on early childhood gives us the opportunity to lift developmental trajectories across the lifespan, providing highly impactful interventions and adding the most overall years of life."
How can effective collaborations enhance the research enterprise?
"Collaboration is essential for successful research. Few, if any of us, are individually qualified to singularly implement a large-scale study, capable of changing population health indicators. However, when the right team gets together, anything is possible. As the old saying goes, 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.'”
