Chanukah Activities Make
Chag HaUrim Extra Special at TABC
|
At TABC, our Chanukah celebrations ran throughout the week.
On Monday and Tuesday, although school was closed, our halls were buzzing with the sounds of students who had joined us for Shacharit, breakfast and shiurim by Rabbi Adler and Rabbi Fridman, respectively.
Also on Monday, Rabbi Duvie Nachbar and Rabbi Daniel Fridman welcomed their talmidim into their homes for Chanukah Mesibot, which enhanced rebbe-talmid bonds, as well as those between the students.
When we returned to school on Wednesday, everyone was excited to buy their raffle tickets for the auction, which was to take place later that day. That afternoon, the whole school gathered for Mincha in the Beit Knesset, followed by the pulling of the raffle winners and the live auction. The room was hopping as the students excitedly bid on such items as a two tickets to Broadway with Mr. Vahedi, a Yankees game for three with Rabbi Adler, and more. See photos
here
.
Thursday was another exciting day. For the freshman and sophomore classes, their rebbeim hosted celebratory breakfasts. Those who live locally brought their talmidim into their homes, welcoming them with open arms. (See photos here.) The rebbeim who live a little farther away hosted them at local restaurants, enjoying the camaraderie that comes with a shared meal. The juniors and seniors gathered to daven Mincha together, which was followed by a chagiga which was filled with music, dancing, simchat hayom, and lively ruach! The room was shaking with the excitement of Chanukah! See photos here.

Blumenthal Family
Hachnasat Sefer Torah
|
This past Friday, TABC had the special opportunity to welcome a new Sefer Torah donated by the Blumenthal family.
The whole school davened together in the Beit Knesset and the program started off with the privilege of listening to Rabbi Adler, Rosh Yeshiva. In his remarks, he mentioned that Chazal state, "Adam moshel l'sefer Torah", a person is compared to a sefer Torah. It doesn't state
'tzaddik'
or
'chassid'
but simply
'adam'.
We translate
'adam'
simply as a mentch, someone who has sterling character and cares about other people. He relayed that Edith and Ziggy Blumenthal truly lived their lives with those characteristics and deserved to be compared to a sefer Torah. Next we heard from Jacob Blumenthal '19, who was able to describe and give a real appreciation of who his grandparents were. At the conclusion of the speeches, we danced the Torah into its new home. The dancing was incredible and leibidik as the students fed off the school bands' contagious energy. Finally, the students were treated to a delicious breakfast spread to celebrate this accomplishment as well.

Biomedical Update
Throughout the year each unit of our STEM: Biomedical Sciences course is devoted to another day of Creation. For Unit 3, students had to find plants from the surroundings and then bring them into class to classify them with their peers- this is just the beginning of classification and dissections for students which will begin right after Chanukah. In honor of Chanukah, we also had a lesson on oils and how fats can affect our bodies. Building off of that, the students have a research project due over Chanukah describing the process of obtaining and lighting the Menorah in the Beit Hamikdash. As Rosh Chodesh always falls on Chanukah, for Unit 4- the Sun, Moon, and Stars, students got a quick break from biomedical studies and had a surprise in class research project on the origins of Rosh Chodesh and the mitzvah of Kiddush HaChodesh. Students worked in pairs researching the basis for the Mitzvah from the Torah, how the Mishnayot explained how that was put into practice, and eventually how our modern calendar was set on a 19- year cycle by Hillel the Second. They looked up research articles on the Jewish calendar's accuracy and found out that it is so accurate that it is only off by 1 day every 14,000 years- that's pretty accurate for individuals without computers! Students had to do all the research themselves and really came away with newfound research skills. Chag Sameach to everyone!

Social Psychology in the Parshiyot of Bereishit
Rabbi Dr. Schnall's Psychology classes have been studying the social psychology of persuasion, including the role of reciprocity in influencing behavior -- and applying this knowledge while grappling with various sections of Sefer Bereishit. Ask your son how reciprocity helps us understand Eliezer's interactions both with Rivka and her family, why Yitzchak requested that Eisav present him with a meal specifically before blessing him, and also Yaakov's dealings with Eisav in Parshat Vayishlach.

On Sunday, December 2, four members of the TABC debate team participated in the Yeshiva University Great Debate. They all debated successfully against other teams. Aharon Goldstein also competed in the extemporaneous speech event at the debate and was awarded second prize.
