Mexico Mission Trip 2020

On Sundays 2/9 and 2/23 at both 9:45 (Library) and 11:00 (FR), we will host a Mexico 2020 Mission Trip Information/ Interest Meeting. This meeting is for those who would like to learn about the annual house-building trip members of St. Mark's make each year to Tijuana, Mexico.  Dates for this year's trip are June 26 - July 4.

December 2019 - General Ministry Fund Financial Update

Offerings for December were $14,489 above budget ($135,680 versus budgeted offerings of $121,191). Fiscal year-to-date (FYTD), we are now $35,857 above budgeted offerings of $479,713, and 7.4% above last year's actual offerings over the same time period.

Expenses for December were $2,091 below budget (spending $84,774 versus a budgeted $86,865).  The driving factor - similar to last month - was savings of nearly $4,000 in the Staff line item, which was partially offset by higher-than-budgeted Benevolences because of strong offerings. FYTD, we are $26,650 below budgeted expenses of $485,540. Nearly all those net savings are attributable to our pastoral transition.

The bottom line for December is that we brought in $51,437 more than we spent versus our projection to bring in $34,601 more than we spent. This puts us $16,836 ahead of budget for the month. On a FYTD basis, we are $64,004 ahead of budget on a net basis (i.e., looking at total inflows and outflows). We have brought in $59,827 more than we spent versus a projection to spend $4,177 more than we brought in at this point in the fiscal year.

Please feel free to contact Jennifer Droubay or Mike McKeller in the Church office with any questions. Thank you.

Moral Voices, Moral Choices

The Peace and Justice Committee at St. Mark's invites us all to use our moral voices to advocate for justice in the following areas: food, housing, creation, and immigration. We are also invited to make moral choices in our personal behavior that impact these areas.

Recent news in  Forbes  and  The Washington Post  tell us that the U.S. population growth rate has fallen to its lowest rate (0.48%) in 100 years and the decade of 2010 - 2019 saw the slowest 10 year growth since we became a nation under the constitution in 1790. The causes of this low growth rate are increased mortality and decreased immigration. Those here are living longer and those not here are being prevented to coming due to the change in immigration policies. The implications of having a slower growth rate are many for the US economy and are discussed in the articles cited above, but the implications for the country on the basis of historical, cultural, and moral considerations are deep and significant for people of faith. St. Mark's has sponsored families from Africa and Europe in recent years as an outpouring of our calling to welcome the stranger and extend opportunity and refuge to those in need. It is a part of our American story that as a nation of immigrants we continue that ongoing welcoming cycle and it has given this nation a depth that few other nations enjoy.
The present administration is severely cutting admissions into the country, even of those seeking asylum. In the next few months, we will look at the specifics of some of these policies and the implications they have for people of faith. For now, please consider seeking out more information from the following resources:

1) Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is one of the leading immigration agencies in the country. It has proudly resettled over 500,000 immigrants in its 80 year history. The website,  www.lirs.orgis a source of information and advocacy. Consider signing up to receive their newsletter. You'll find the link at the bottom of their main web page.

2) The National Immigration Law Center lists a host of organizations with information on immigration at  https://www.nilc.org/get-involved/links/aro/natres/

3)  Google Alerts  - Google will send you news on any topic you choose. Consider making one for immigration. You can set it up to give you a weekly digest of important stories that come straight to your email inbox.
