ENGAGING A NEW GENERATION OF VOLUNTEERS
Jennifer Treadway, United Way of Southeast Alaska Board of Directors
Like many Juneau transplants, Jennifer Treadway, came for a job; uniquely, she stayed to volunteer.

"I fell in love with Alaska," she says of her post-collegiate internship at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum in 2010.

"When the year was up, I wasn't ready to leave," she says. So she did another internship, with the Alaska State Archives.

"When that year was up, I still wasn't ready to leave," Treadway explains. "So I became an AmeriCorps volunteer with the United Way."

This, as they say, was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, not only with the United Way of Southeast Alaska, but community service in general. Treadway has since completed her AmeriCorps service, plus a paid stint as the United Way's resource development director. Currently, she volunteers on its Board of Directors. Continue Reading .

United Way of Southeast Alaska Receives $21,474.78 from Coeur Alaska

Mark Kiessling, General Manager of Coeur Alaska, Kensington Mine presents a check for $26,474.78 to Warren Russell, Chair of the United Way of Southeast Alaska Board. This amount represents the pledged amount for the 2017 annual campaign of $21,474.78 from 50 employees of Coeur Alaska Kensington Mine and a matching corporate gift of $5,000 from Coeur Alaska, Kensington Mine. In making the presentation at the November 15 th Juneau Chamber Luncheon Mr. Kiessling noted that, "small contributions in large volumes from a number of people can make a huge difference in our community."

Kiessling acknowledged the great support from the Coeur employees for the programs of United Way, particularly their support of the Coeur Alaska LEARN UNITED: Reading Tutor Program. The LEARN UNITED: Reading Tutor Program is a United Way of Southeast Alaska's tutor program that is funded by Coeur Alaska. The program engages volunteer mentors to work one-on-one with students who are falling behind in reading. Many of the tutors in the program are Coeur employees who graciously give of their time to ensure that children are on reading level by 3rd grade.

In accepting the check, Chair Russell acknowledged that the support of United Way of Southeast Alaska by Coeur Alaska also means supporting the 33 partner agencies of United Way. Each donation given to United Way of Southeast Alaska is an investment in the better future of all in Southeast Alaska.
