Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary
The Armenian Church styles her Sourp Asdvadzadzin: the "Holy Mother-of-God"-an almost cosmic title which has elicited reverent love from generations of Armenian Christians, and is honored in the name of many of our churches.
In more common parlance she is St. Mary: the girl of humble piety who carried the Hope of the world within her body, and delivered Him as a baby in Bethlehem.
Saturday, December 9, marks the Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary: one of a cluster of holy days on which the Armenian Church expresses its tender devotion to the mother of Jesus Christ.
Through her life of holiness and purity, and her graceful acceptance of the role to which God called her, Mary ranks among the pre-eminent exemplars of the Christian faith, whose birth and very conception are occasions for celebration.

Advent Bible Study
St. Mary Church held its third Bible Study session on Tuesday, December 4 entitled
"God's Protection and Delight"
(Zephaniah 3:14-20). During this year's Bible Study we take a Journey Through Advent with the Old Testament Prophets. The Christmas story began in the Old Testament. God's nature didn't change, nor did ours, and He had our redemption in mind all the time. The prophets Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Micah all proclaim the Christ that was to come.
The group of 12 people enjoyed the insightful Bible readings and discussion led by Ara Stepanyan. All parishioners are invited to attend the Bible Study at St. Mary Church to help celebrate the season of Advent and prepare their hearts and minds for Christmas.
The next Bible Study will take place on Tuesday, December 11 and the title of the study is "The Peace Jesus Brings" (Micah 5:1-5). We hope you will join us at the forthcoming Bible Studies - please refer to the flyer for more information.

30 Years Ago Today...
For the people of Armenia, it was a time of the deepest grief, when the external signs of death and destruction seemed inescapable.
For Armenians throughout the world, it was a time for decisive action, which drew us away from our parochial divisions, and sharply focused our united hearts and minds on the cause of our afflicted homeland.
By any measure, the earthquake of December 7, 1988, was a turning point in the history of the Armenian people. And as with all such moments, our experience of the earthquake and its aftermath changed us. Armenia itself was reborn as an independent republic. The bond between homeland and diaspora was strengthened. Travel to Armenia-once fraught with difficulty-became common and fluid.
A new generation of Armenians was decisively shaped by both the tragedy of a catastrophe, and the blessing of so many helping hands reaching out in a time of need.
Today will mark 30 years (!) since that dark day. Even all these years later, the purposes of almighty God remain deeply mysterious. But there can be no doubt that the Armenian people have been instruments of His will, in times of great affliction as well as great achievement.
On this solemn Friday, please take a moment to pray that God will remember the precious souls He drew to His kingdom 30 years ago; and that He will bless the land and people that emerged from, and were changed by, that time of trial.

Pilgrims View the Holy Lance of Keghart
Last week, worshippers at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin had a rare opportunity to venerate one of the most remarkable relics in the custody of the Armenian Church: the Holy Lance of Keghart, which tradition holds to be the spear-point that pierced Christ's body during his crucifixion.
It happened on December 1-the Feast of the Holy Apostles Sts. Thaddeus and Bartholomew-which in recent years has been declared a day of pilgrimage by the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II. When the relic was brought out in procession, people excitedly drew close to kiss it and receive its blessing. Click on the link to
read about the service.
(Visitors to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art can see a replica of the lance on display in its precious reliquary as part of the museum's "Armenia!" exhibit.)
St. Thaddeus is credited as having conveyed the Holy Lance when he brought Christianity to the Armenian people in the 1st century. He and St. Bartholomew, both original disciples of Jesus, are considered the "first enlighteners" of Armenia. Click on the link to learn their story in the video "
Tongues of Fire," part of the Diocese's Bread and Salt video series.

Look for the 2019 Diocesan Calendar in Your Mail
The 2019 Diocesan Calendar, titled "Armenia! at the Met: To Gaze on the Beauty of the Lord," has been arriving in homes throughout the community.
For this year's edition, the calendar drew on the rare masterworks of Armenian art collected at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, in its monumental "Armenia!" exhibit. The splendid creative works depicted in the calendar represent a highpoint of Christian artistic expression, inspired by the spiritual wealth of the Armenian people.

12 Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, "Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God."16 Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'19 "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' 20 "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'21 "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'22 "'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.' 23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'"
(Luke 14:12-24)
