ILG Launches New Program to Help Under-Resourced Communities Address Climate Change
Californians deserve to live in communities where they can have access to clean air and water, clean transportation, affordable housing and economic opportunity. Yet many communities across the state lack the staff capacity and resources to develop projects and secure funding to make this a reality for their residents . To help address this need, the Institute for Local Government (ILG) and the California Strategic Growth Council (SCG) have partnered to launch a new pilot program, called BOOST, to support local governments across the state build capacity and reach their goals.

Through BOOST, ILG and SCG will help participants navigate complex issues and create healthier, more vibrant communit ies by:

  • Building awareness of funding opportunities to address climate action;
  • Organizing projects to be best positioned to meet its goals;
  • Optimizing existing resources and build more capacity;
  • Strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and identifying new opportunities for regional engagement and collaboration; and
  • Transforming their approach to addressing climate action.
Through this pilot program, ILG and SGC have partnered with ten cities and two regions to provide tailored support on advancing climate action through December 2020. The communities include:
  • Arcata
  • Arvin
  • Bakersfield
  • Coachella Valley
  • East Palo Alto
  • El Centro
  • Mammoth Lakes
  • Paramount
  • Salinas
  • San Diego
  • San Joaquin Valley
  • Ventura
The California Legislature appropriated $1 million for this pilot program from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, administered through California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health outcomes, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
