Similar to road preparation and maintenance that comes into play when a snow storm arrives, the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport is no different. The airport snow removal equipment is used to maintain the airport year round. For example, the work trucks used on the grounds are equipped to have a plow attached come winter. The only dedicated piece of snow removal equipment is the power broom which is used to remove light amounts of snow and other leftover debris from the runway.

The runways can’t be treated with salt due to the chance of corrosion and severe damage to the airplanes, but some approved materials can be used when ice is expected. Generally two people can clear a single runway and associated taxi-way in about two to three hours but to clear the entire airport with only two people would take about 12 to 14 hours depending on the amount of snow. The Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport is predicting 8-12” of snow this year.
