News From St. Sarkis Church
Լուրեր Ս. Սարգիս Եկեղեցիէն

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Armenia. On December 7, 1988, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook northeastern Armenia which followed by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock four minutes later. The Town of Spitak was nearly leveled, 25,000 people were killed, 15,000 were injured and over 500,000 people were left homeless from the devastation.

There will be special prayers this Sunday to remember and pray for the victims and the survivors of the worst natural disaster of Armenia.

The Community Celebrate A New Prelate

Last Sunday, December 2, 2018, a joyful celebration welcoming our new Prelate His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian and marking his recent elevation to Archbishop took place at Terrace on the Park in Queens, New York, with a sold-out attendance that celebrated both the election and elevation.
The Community of St. Sarkis Church was represented with a large number of attendees.

Salt & Light Youth Group
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian

On Friday, November 30th, 2018 the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group met for their 4th session of this season. As they have become accustomed to, the children gathered in Chadrjian Hall for a meal together and some social time before they broke out in to their facilitator groups. Last weeks breakout discussion was from the Prayer Study of the YDISCIPLE series and was entitled "Why Pray." The discussion, led by the individual trained facilitators, proved to be engaging and insightful for the kids.

As we approach the holidays, the Salt & Light Youth Ministry Committee is also planning some exciting outreach and social activities for our members. Our youth group is collecting gifts to donate to the St. Mary's Childrens Hospital in Bayside this holiday season. Additionally, we will be taking a group of our kids to spend a morning with the children at the hospital doing an interactive craft or playing games with them. We believe this will be an impactful experience for our members as they may have an opportunity to provide happiness and cheer to those in a less fortunate circumstance during the holidays. The youth ministry committee is also excited for their first "Ugly Christmas Sweater Party", which will be held on Friday, December 14th from 8pm-11pm. This event is a joint event hosted by the Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF for their members and families. We would also like to encourage any families that have children 10 years old and older that might be interested in joining either or both organizations to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to have their children meet other youth from our community.
St. Sarkis Church Sunday School
Reported by Mrs. Arev Mouradian

This past Sunday, during Sunday School, our children experienced a time of laughter, joy and love towards one another. The Fourth and Fifth grade students read a special story to our younger children. Everyone listened with such intensity. The Seventh and Eight graders helped make special crafts with the Kindergarten, First, Second and Thirds grade classes.

This is what the Christmas spirit is all about, to share and spread joy to others. We are all so pleased and honored to share our time with these amazing children. God has granted us a special gift to guide these young souls and we can not be any more thankful.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (1.1-12)
 Paul, Silas and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (13:1-9)
Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God."
Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.' "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.' "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.' "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.' " 'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.' "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.' "

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
FEAST OF THE CONCEPTION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY
Sunday, December 9, is the Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. This is one of the eight feast days devoted to the Holy Virgin in the Armenian Church's liturgical calendar. This feast is always celebrated on December 9, and is part of the Church's preparation for Christmas. The faithful rejoice in the event that celebrates Mary's conception in fulfillment of the prayers of her parents and who was nurtured to become the mother of the Messiah. Bible readings for this Feast are: Song of Songs 6:3-8; Malachi 3:1-2; Galatians 3:24-29; Luke 1:39-56.

EVE OF THE FAST OF ST. JAMES
This Sunday (December 9) is the eve (paregentan) of the Fast of St. James (Hagop) of Nisibus. This five-day fast, Monday to Friday, leads us to the Feast of St. James, which is next Sunday. Traditionally the entire fifty-day period of Advent was a period of fasting, similar to Great Lent. In modern times, three week-long (Monday to Friday) fasts are observed during Advent: Fast of Advent (Hisnagats Bahk); Fast of St. James (Sourp Hagopeh Bahk), and the Fast of the Nativity (Dznuntyan Bahk).

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
This Sunday (December 9) is the third Sunday of Advent, a season of anticipation for the coming of Christ that gives us purpose to live in hope regardless of the many challenges and vicissitudes that face us. John the Baptist is the greatest Advent figure (read Matthew, Chapter 3 and Luke, Chapter 3). In the Armenian Church tradition this period of waiting is known as Hisnag-the fifty day period that leads to the celebration of Christ's Nativity and Epiphany on January 6.

ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA, THE WONDERWORKER
This Saturday (December 8) the Armenian Church remembers St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, a fourth century Bishop of Myra, Lycia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was a defender of orthodoxy and because of many miracles attributed to his intercession he is called "the Wonderworker." He was a secret and generous giver of gifts and some believe him to be the model for Santa Clause.

Also remembered this week:
St. Minas, Monday, December 10
Sts. Cornelius the Centurion and Polycarp of Smyrna, Tuesday, December 11
St. Eustratius the Martyr, Thursday, December 13
