Race, Racism, and Resistance
Are you looking for nonfiction titles from DPL's teen collection to support conversations on race, racism, and resistance? This curated list will give you and your students background history on topics like the rise of the terrorist group the Ku Klux Klan , as well as help in understanding our current racial divide in America . The Bibliocommons platform allows library staff to make these lists, as well as our community members (that’s you!). If you’d like us to put together a topic list for you, check out the Teacher Request form on our website.
Oregon Battle of the Books 2020
Another year of Oregon Battle of the Books is upon us. The OBOB committee chose 12 diverse titles for our high school competitors to read and review, and the regional battle is coming up soon. While there are fewer teams at the high school level for our region, those who participate are dedicated members of our literary community. If your school does not have a team this year, consider leading one next year. The library will be in your corner with multiple copies of OBOB books, plus a link from our homepage to practice questions, resources, and more. If you'd like a librarian to booktalk any of these titles, just drop us a line through the Teacher Request form . Explore and reserve this year’s titles, here .

Get the Benefits of a DPL Educator Card
Deschutes County educators, from preschool and homeschool teachers to those affiliated with local school systems, can visit their local DPL location and apply for an Educator’s Card. These cards allow for 100 items to be checked out, 30 holds to be placed, and a four-week check-out period. This card can be held in addition to a personal library card, allowing you to keep separate the library materials you use personally and the materials you use for class. As a reminder, while DPL no longer charges late fines, cardholders are still financially responsible for all items checked out to either card and are responsible for lost or significantly overdue fines. Stop by any library location and show us your school ID, care provider license, or homeschool paperwork for the current academic year and we will get you started!

Happy Birthday to Us! DPL Turns 100
The Deschutes County Library system formed in January 1920, with 3,488 books in circulation and 1,252 cardholders by the end of that first year. Now, 100 years later, we've grown into a robust library system with six locations in Deschutes County, hundreds of thousands of items in our collection, and nearly 90,000 library card holders. Join the celebration in 2020 as the we look back on a century of community. For the first 10 months of the year we will highlight a different decade of our history during each month—the 1920s in January, the 1930s in February, the 1940s in March, and so on. Look for fun displays in libraries that highlight each decade, watch for special “Deschutes by the Decade” programs honoring Library history, pick up a free 100 th anniversary sticker, and be sure to check out the new, limited-edition anniversary library cards. It all culminates with a grand masquerade ball in the fall, a nod to Library’s hugely popular masquerade ball of 1920. Learn more about library history here .
