Dr. Scott Angle sworn in as director of NIFA
Dr. J. Scott Angle was recently sworn in as the Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). President Trump appointed Angle for a six-year term at the agency on August 31.
Angle most recently served as the president and CEO of the International Fertilizer Development Center, an organization that helps agriculture in developing countries use fertilizer and other technologies. Scott's resume includes 10 years as Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia and a long academic and administrative tenure at the University of Maryland.

Consumers confused on nutritional value of milk alternatives
Dairy milk and plant-based milk alternatives are purchased with nutrition in mind, yet many consumers are not aware of nutritional distinctions between products, according to a new survey by IPSOS commissioned by Dairy Management Inc.
Plant-based milk alternatives have grown in number and volume over the years, so understanding consumers' expectation of "milk" is important, especially as the Food & Drug Administration is reviewing the standards associated with milk. The dairy industry has criticized the use of the term "milk" for plant-based alternatives, such as soy milk or almond milk, and asked FDA to restrict the use of the term if the product isn't from a cow. OIE sets international AMR recommendations
At the three-day Second Global Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance & Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Animals, hosted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in Morocco, global leaders in animal health discussed new ideas and solutions to the global rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Prevention of AMR in farming is critical to human health as well as to food safety, food security, animal health and animal welfare, OIE said following the conference. Antimicrobials are used around the world to control and treat infections in animals and people, but their overuse and misuse puts their efficacy at risk. Unprecedented movements of people, animals, goods and food worldwide enable resistant pathogens to populate the planet with ease, the international agency said.

Wisconsin confirms bovine TB in dairy herd
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirmed Oct. 30 that a dairy herd in Dane County, Wis., has tested positive for bovine tuberculosis (TB) after meat inspectors identified a carcass during a routine slaughter inspection and sent a sample to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for testing.
Through animal identification records, the carcass was traced back to a herd in Dane County that DATCP immediately quarantined. A quarantine prevents any animals from moving onto or off of the farm. Read more

The 35th ADSA Discover Conference
The 35
th ADSA Discover Conference "Effects of Stress on Health and Production in Dairy Cows", held October 29 to November 1, 2018, was a great success. There were a total of 193 people registered for the conference. They came from 18 countries and 29 states. Dr. Marcus Kehrli, USDA-ARS, co-chair of the program committee shares highlights from the meeting on the ADSA You Tube site. NEW IN 2019!
In response to member feedback, we are extending the meeting through Wednesday evening. Plan now to stay for Wednesday afternoon sessions and Wednesday evening social events!
The 2019 ADSA Annual Meeting program page has been updated to include the starting lineup of symposia and workshops, by day, along with descriptions of each, confirmed speakers as of today, and presentation titles (if available). Additional symposia are being finalized. We will update this page regularly with additions and confirmed speakers, so please check back often.
Please note that in addition to the six preconference symposia and workshops on Sunday, late-breaking abstracts will be presented on Sunday afternoon. This meeting is packed with dairy science from Sunday through Wednesday and we hope you can be there for all of it!
The housing site will open in November 2018, and registration will open in early February 2019. Abstract submissions are being accepted online now, and if you want to host an event in Cincinnati, please let us know by using the online form.
We look forward to your participation in the most comprehensive global dairy science meeting in the world, June 23 through 26, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Please be sure to visit the 2019 Annual Meeting website frequently for updates and help spread the word about this landmark meeting.
