Parsha Minute
Although I drive away from my house thinking about Chanukah, I am soon overwhelmed by the decorations for the upcoming Christian holiday. Does the parsha have any thoughts about how to keep my focus on Chanukah? Find out in this week's Parsha Minute!

From the desk of our
S.T.E.A.M. Lab
This week in STEAM we learned new math games that focused on counting, number recognition, and patterns. We read
Jeremy’s Dreidle
, a book about a boy who makes a Braille
dreidle
for his father. We discussed what Braille is, and then asked the kids to make their own Braille dreidel out of play dough. We also had stations set up for menorah building from different materials.

Inauguration Celebration
Students, faculty and staff, parents, and members of the community enjoyed coming together last Friday to celebrate the inauguration of The Dr. Robert A. Behar Sports and Recreation Complex.
Ha'Ya'ar Hakasum (the Magical Forest) was officially opened, as were the new covered outdoor basketball court, playground, courtyard, and amphitheater. A ceremony was followed by a delicious lunch and fun activities for the students, including a face painter and balloon artist. Thank you to Dr. Behar for his wonderful gift and labor of love.

Shirley's Corner
First grade students were excited for their special visit from Mrs. Shirley Soifet who came to read them Chanukah stories and sing songs in both English and Yiddish about Chanukah! Shirley's corner was created through the Better2Lead initiative last year, which fulfilled dreams of some of the residents of the Medallion. Newton's Laws of Motion
8th grade students had a hands-on introduction to Newton’s Laws of Motion. They made balloon slingshots, recorded the force required to stretch the slingshot, then launched a marshmallow from the slingshot and measured the distance it traveled. By repeating multiple trials when the slingshot was stretched to four different lengths, students were able to see how increasing force increases the distance the marshmallow travels.

Geometry by Design
Third-grade students selected three mini-golf project designs (out of 12 possibilities) to be completed by the 9th- and 10th-grade geometry students by the end of March (2019). Further, the third-graders suggested different obstacles they would like to be incorporated into each mini-golf project. In so doing, the project became a collaborative effort between high-school and lower school students. Additional collaborative activities are being planned for later this year.
