St. Bon's Remembers
As Newfoundlanders and Canadians, we recognize the sacrifices made by many through military and naval service. Each year, during the month of November, we remember and honour those who fought for our freedoms - especially this year, as Nov. 11, 2018 marked the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War.  St. Bon's participated in and organized many events to remember and honour those fallen individuals, many of whom are St. Bon's Alumni.

On November 7, 2018, our Grade 9 students, along with history teacher Mr. Chris Peters, hosted the second annual No Stone Left Alone Ceremony to be held in Newfoundland. The inaugural Newfoundland ceremony was held last year by our Grade 9 and 11 students. In partnership with the No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation, our students placed almost 1000 poppies on the graves of service men and women laid to rest in the Field of Honour at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. On November 9, 2018, St. Bon's held its annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Basilica. The ceremony opened and closed with the March of the Flag Party, presented by the United Nations Peacekeeping Veterans Association  Music was provided by our Wind Ensemble and our K-6 Choirs, under the direction of Band Instructor Ms. Vincenza Etchegary and Primary/Elementary Choral Instructor Ms. Brenda Gatherall. Students, teachers, alumni and friends paid special reflection on our "Fallen 51" alumni, who gave their lives in the First World War. A candle was lit to honour each of those 51 men, creating a beautiful tribute. Thank you to the Pastoral Committee and President's Office and Maintenance Staff for putting together this touching event.

Our Grade 1 students created beautiful poppy artwork as they learned about remembrance and sacrifice. 

St. Bons' acts of remembrance continued throughout the month, with students laying a wreath at the City of St. John's Remembrance Day Parade at the War Memorial. Alumnus Thomas Nangle '09 was integral in having the downtown St. John's National War Memorial constructed. Additionally, class projects in art, language arts and social studies engaged our students in remembering our fallen. St. Bon's is committed to keeping the act of remembrance and reflection alive in our student body.

for the Following Christmas Events!

  • 2018 Annual Alumni Christmas Social: Thursday, December 20th, 7pm-9pm in the Aula Maxima at St. Bon's. A suggested donation of $5 at the door goes to our Bursary Fund and gets you two drink tickets (only for our 19+ guests!). Come on out and meet up with old friends and teachers, share a beer or glass of wine and get in the Christmas Spirit!
  • Senior Christmas concert: Featuring several bands and choirs of our talented students. Wednesday, December 5th, 7pm. Tickets, $5, available at the school. 
  • Advent Mass: Monday, December 3rd at The Basilica. All are welcome. 
  • Christmas Music Coffee House Cabaret: Thursday, Dec. 27th at St. Bonaventure's College, time TBC. Featuring St. Bon's Music Students and Alumni. Suggested donation of $10 at the door in support of the 2019 SBC Music trip to Greece. 
What's Happening at SBC?
  • Our Senior Basketball Team took home the gold in Tier 2 of the Keith Keating Memorial Tournament this past weekend. Congrats to Sam A. '19 on being name an All Star of the tournament! 
  • For the first time, St. Bon's entered a float in the Downtown St. John's Christmas Parade. Our Hogwart's Express (from children's fantasy book series "Harry Potter") won first place in the non-commercial category! Thank you to the Stone family for taking the lead on this. 
  • The Junior High Boys soccer team took bronze in their most recent tournament.

  • In November, we welcomed Peg Doucette as she shared 5 saint relics from Ottawa with many of our classes from Kindergarten to Grade 9. 
  • The Knights of Columbus St. Paul's Council sponsored an Oratorical Competition at St. Bon's around the theme "Keep Christ in Christmas". Special thanks to alumnus Gerry Puddister '74 for organizing this. Congratulations to the winners: 1st Place - Elizabeth O. '22, 2nd Place - Ashlyn M. '22, 3rd Place - Cecilia M. '23.

  • The annual Heritage Fair was held in November. There were many wonderful projects dedicated to history and heritage. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to the organizers and volunteer judges. 
  • A delegation of our Senior High students joined over 2000 youth committed to faith and justice at the Ignatian Family Teach In for Justice in Washington (hosted by the Ignatian Solidarity Network), accompanied by teachers Ms. Colette Prior and Ms. Carolyn Windsor. Our students joined in many learning and action experiences related to social justice issue in immigration, mass incarceration and more. 
  • Congratulations to our Band Director, Mrs. Vincenza Etchegary, who was given a Builder's Award from the Canadian Music Educators' Association. This is awarded to an educator who advances music education in a Canadian Province.

St. Bon's Partners with Munn Insurance to Offer Alumni, Parents and Staff Group Discounts
We are thrilled to announce that St. Bon's has recently signed an agreement with Munn Insurance to offer a dicounted rate to alumni, parents and staff. A portion of the premiums will also go directly to the school to support student programs. You can contact Munn for a quote, as per the below information. The group rate is open to new customers, as well as existing Munn customers upon renewal.
