National Correctional Officers Week
Today marks the culmination of National Correctional Officers Week and we want to extend our gratitude to all Custody Assistants for their service and dedication.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5187, creating National Correctional Officers Week to acknowledge personnel who work in jails, prisons and custody facilities across the country.

Please join us in honoring the many contributions and accomplishments of hard-working Custody Assistants throughout the County. We salute you!
Support for Industry Station Youth Athletic League
May 3: PPOA proudly sponsored the Industry Station Youth Activities League (YAL) Invitational Golf Tournament. Proceeds enable the YAL to provide quality athletic programs and camps designed to help children steer clear of gangs and drugs. "The Youth Activities League is an excellent example of a program that makes a difference in the lives of young boys and girls in the communities we serve," said PPOA President Tab Rhodes. "Helping the next generation as they navigate life in their formative years is invaluable and PPOA is proud to support that mission."
Meet and Confer re: Temple Station Scheduling
May 4: PPOA representatives took part in a Meet and Confer with Captain Reyes of Temple Station along with his staff and Employee Relations representatives to discuss scheduling concerns. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Rhodes and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr.
Proposed Lieutenant's Exam
May 4: PPOA was provided a presentation on the anticipated processes regarding the proposed 2021 Lieutenant Promotional Examination. The presentation was conducted by Captain O'Brien and representatives from Employee Relations, Personnel Administration Bureau and Sworn Exams Unit. PPOA was represented at this meeting by President Rhodes and Executive Director Quint.
Sheriff Discusses Current Events
May 5: Sheriff Alex Villanueva hosted a Facebook live stream on Wednesday to discuss current events, including the passing of retired Assistant Sheriff Raymon Morris, deputy-involved shootings, transparency, the Civilian Oversight Commission and more.
Meet and Confer with Community College Bureau
May 5: PPOA representatives took part in a Meet and Confer with Captain Gannon and Community College Bureau representatives regarding ongoing discussions on staffing and scheduling issues. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Rhodes, Board Member Henry Jimenez, Executive Director Quint and Labor Representative Teresa O'Neil.
Meet and Confer re: MPP Revisions
May 5: PPOA took part in a Meet and Confer with Employee Relations representatives to discuss revisions to the Manual of Policy and Procedures. Participants in the teleconference included representatives from Employee Relations as well as President Rhodes and Executive Director Quint.
PPOA Legislative Meeting
May 6: PPOA representatives hosted a teleconference on Thursday to discuss this Association's support, opposition and monitoring of approximately 90 public safety legislative bills proposed in the current session. Meeting participants included President Rhodes, Executive Board Member Tony Coleman, Executive Director Quint, Legislative Consultant Art Reddy and PPOA Legislative Representatives based in Sacramento. Support for Miguel Contreras Foundation
May 7: PPOA was proud to support the Miguel Contreras Charitable Foundation at a worthy event yesterday. A virtual poker tournament helped raise funds for this 501(c)3 non-profit partner of the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO – of which PPOA is one of 300 affiliated unions and labor organizations. President Rhodes joined LA County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, California State Senator Maria Elena Durazo (SD24) and other labor leaders for this online event, which helped the Foundation in its drive to help the LA County workers "share in the prosperity earned from their hard work, expect fair and safe workplaces, and raise their voices about the public decisions that affect their lives."
One Week Left to Apply for PPOA College Scholarships
PPOA is proud to announce that 12 scholarships worth $13,500 total are available to help further the education of PPOA members and their sons and daughters. The deadline to apply is close of business (5:00 pm) on May 14, 2021. Since this program's inception nine years ago, PPOA has awarded approximately $100,000 in scholarships to members of the PPOA family. Per social distancing guidelines from LBM Sportfishing, our 85-foot boat will be limited to 36 people, so please reserve your spot as soon as possible. PPOA fishing trips sell out every year.
