BC Wood at the 2021 BAU Fair
Munich, German - January 11-16, 2021
Brian Hawrysh | [email protected]
With the travel restrictions mandated as part of the recent COVID-19 clamp downs, BC Wood has developed innovative ways to promote its’ members value-added products in offshore markets. In keeping with these new realities, BC Wood has found a safe, effective way for its’ members to participate in the in-person BAU fair in Munich, January 2021.

BAU is the largest and best-known building products show in the European market and the organizers are saying that exhibition space is already over 85% sold out. Held every two years, the BAU typically attracts over 270,000 attendees with some 55,000 of these attendees come from neighboring Western European countries. A unique feature of the BAU show is that it consolidates companies featuring wood products and wood building systems in one of its sixteen halls. So, while the show is very large, all the potential customers for wood-based products and building systems are clustered into one display hall.
“With Corona” Trade Shows in Japan
Jim Ivanoff | [email protected]
As COVID-19 shutdown large gatherings in Japan last winter, we wondered how and when BC Wood would be able to once again offer industry the opportunity to take part in Asian trade shows. Fortunately, trade shows were restarted in July as Japan has waged a successful battle to keep the virus in check. BC Wood has booked space at the November Japan Home and Building Show, so I visited two trade shows over the past week to see what a large-scale “with Corona” event would look like. Surprisingly, except for everyone wearing masks, temperature checks upon entry, and hand sanitizer everywhere, they looked the same as before.
Bond and Build Exchange Events
Dave Farley | [email protected]
As we move into the fall and we have settled into the new and creative ways to conduct business, I thought it would be good time to discuss some upcoming market development activities.

In late October, BC Wood will partner with Bond Events to organize and deliver the Bond Custom Home Forum. For those unfamiliar with Bond, these guys organize superb events where buyers and suppliers meet one-on-one for pre-set 30-minute meetings. At Bond Custom, BC manufacturers will have up to 12 meetings with top builders and architects from select regions across the United States.
Spotlight
Sansin
For more than 30 years, Sansin (www.sansin.com) has been focused on creating the best performing, most beautiful water-borne wood finishes in the world for customers who demand the absolute best in performance and beauty for residential and commercial buildings.

Their innovative research and development programs have made them the leader in developing environmentally-friendly interior and exterior wood products finishes and technologies, that deliver outstanding color, durability and performance, without the toxicity found in conventional stains.

Sansin launched with its Classic exterior product in the late 1980s, long before going green was mainstream, and it has since become their flagship finish for the log and timber industry. It is designed to be an eco-friendly, water-borne finish that penetrates deeply into larger and wetter pieces of wood, yet still allows the wood to breathe and release moisture slowly.

That principle of combining high-performance and beauty in a low-VOC, breathable wood finish has become their trademark for all of their products and why Sansin is a beloved wood finish in British Columbia, specified by architects, featured on high profile mass timber buildings, favored by log and timber professionals and carried by premium independent retailers.

Their long-standing mission and vision are tied to their love of wood and protecting it naturally. Their passion for wood is further demonstrated by their support of the industry in British Columbia. This is shown through their consistent support for associations, like BC Wood, engagement with the architectural community and pride in being “Made in Canada.”

Sansin products are sold through a network of independent dealers in North America and Europe. Sansin retailers can be found at www.sansin.com/dealer-locator and their architectural/factory finish Precision Coat line is at www.sansinfactoryfinish.com. Marketing and Sales Tips
Leadership in the New Normal Series – Telling the Story of Your Brand.
FORGET your mission, vision, and value statements and develop a brand story instead!

The problem with traditional mission, vision, and value statements is that they are easily forgotten, never incorporated into the authentic culture of the company, and not lived by everyone.

Don’t get me wrong. Each of these was crafted with the best intentions, however, if they are not living, breathing documents, easily incorporated into the psyche of all employees, recalled and retold easily, then they are not worth the price of the frame you put them in.

What if, instead, you developed a brand story? Stories have been with humankind since our time in caves and have helped us keep oral traditions alive for tens of thousands of years. They are short, engaging, easy to remember, and easy to retell. They may not be told in the same way by every person, but the nuances are always there, as are the key lessons and values.

A brand story tells of the genesis of the company. Where did you come from and where you are today. It shows the highlights of the challenges and successes that brought you to today and the lessons learned from each of them. It tells what you do, why you do it, who you do it for, the value you bring to them, and why they care about it. However, the most crucial part of the brand story is that it tells where you are going and how each employee’s actions matter to the overall success of the company.

A brand story engages everyone. It solidifies the purpose and the culture and makes everyone feel that their contributions matter.

A great brand story inspires people to greatness. It fosters creativity, drive, and innovation. It provides a framework to align the company with the right vendors, customers, and community partners.

What is your brand story, and can everyone in your company not only retell it in the first person but believe in it?

Japan Post Commemorates Canadian Reconstruction Projects and Friendship
Jim Ivanoff | [email protected]
Japan Post has released a stamp series to commemorate Canada’s support in the aftermath of the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. This collection focuses on the special friendship that has been established with the heavily damaged city of Natori where the first two Canadian reconstruction projects were built: the Donguri-Anne Library and the Yuriage Market. To show its appreciation for Canada’s aid, Natori City has held many special events and also became the host town for Canadian athletes who will be competing in the Tokyo Olympics next year. In addition to support from multiple levels of government and numerous industry associations, many BC Wood members also contributed time and materials to these projects and it is wonderful to see the tremendous goodwill that these efforts have created for Canada in Japan.

Big-Time - B.C. Added Value—With Mass Timber
Paul MacDonald, Forestnet

Forest company Kalesnikoff Lumber has a great deal of history, with the fourth generation of the Kalesnikoff family now running the company and mill operation, in British Columbia’s West Kootenay region.

The latest chapter in the company’s 81-year history is now being written, and it’s a very exciting one: the company has invested some $35 million in a Mass Timber production facility that began turning out product earlier this year, creating 50 new technology-centered, local jobs.
Fort St. John RCMP Detachment a Showcase in Energy Efficiency
Grant Cameron, Construct Canada

Site prep work has been completed and utilities installed for a new, $51.4-million RCMP detachment in Fort St. John, B.C., that is being built of locally-sourced mass timber and will have many green features.

The hope is that the building will be a showcase of how energy efficient building practices can be used in northern B.C. It will be the first municipal building in the city built to a net zero energy efficiency standard.
