We Miss Seeing You in Our Theaters...and in Our Beautiful Garden

Our garden was just perking up when we made the decision to temporarily close, just prior to the Governor's order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Spring has come and gone and summer is nearly over. We miss our members and patrons so much. We miss having you in our theaters, in our Sky Room, and we miss sharing our beautiful garden with you.

Our garden is maintained pro-bono by Founder's Society member Stu Polisner, as well as member/volunteers who have helped with weeding and caring for this community space.

Our garden is also home to many dedicated bricks. This is a lasting tax-deductible way for members and patrons to make a gift in memory or in honor of a friend, family member, loved one, colleague, student, or to remember a special occasion, such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation or holiday. (Read about why some of our supporters chose to engrave a brick by clicking here.)

For many years, our garden’s brick installation has been managed by dedicated volunteer and close friend of the Cinema, Bob Smullen. “I started working in the garden about 10 to 15 years ago,” he says. “I worked with the landscapers putting in plants and some of the big benches. I helped put in the lighting in the garden.”

Bob just stumbled into the role of brick installer, he explains. “I did the bricks for several years with Stu [Polisner] and he passed it on to me. My son Mackenzie has been helping me for several years now. We love the Cinema.”

We are so grateful to Bob and Mackenzie, and are thrilled to have them in our Cinema family. Their hard work enables us to provide a pathway in our garden that is a constant reminder of all the members, patrons, and cinema-lovers who make up our community.
A few days ago, Bob and Mackenzie installed our most recent order of engraved bricks.
Brick installations happen one-three times each year, depending upon the volume of orders and timing with our engraver.
We are working hard to prepare our building for reopening when the time is right for us to do so. We are dreaming of sharing meaningful stories with you on our screens, and being with you in our community spaces, like our garden where so many of your stories are immortalized with engraved bricks.

2020 Vic Skolnick Life of Our Cinema Campaign Volunteers Needed

2020 is the 10th anniversary of naming our annual campaign for our late co-founder Vic Skolnick. We named our campaign for Vic shortly after his death as an ongoing tribute as we continue the work of engaging our community in the life and future of the Cinema Arts Centre.

It’s significant that this milestone anniversary coincides with the existential challenges that 2020 has brought to the world. What better time to be reminded of our roots as community builders, innovators, and visionaries who brought cultural, social, educational, and economic transformation to our area. While it may be coincidental, it is also deeply meaningful that this is an anniversary campaign with a heritage and a foundation in the hearts, minds, and lives of the people in our community. This is our campaign and our independent community cinema. This legacy and this opportunity belongs to all of us.

We traditionally launch our campaign in late October, and do most of our solicitations in November and December. Volunteer Campaigners are central to our success. This year, we must raise more funds in order to ensure a smooth and safe re-opening when the time is right for us to do so. This year, we also face the most challenging fundraising climate in our history. For these reasons, Volunteer Campaigners are more vital than ever.

Thank you so much for considering playing a volunteer role in this existential campaign.
