December 2018

Welcome to  Age-Friendly Englewood, a project of 50+ nonprofits,  civic
organizations and houses of worship working with  City  government
-- as well as individual residents --  to help  make
Englewood, NJ,
a fantastic place for older adults
to age
in place with dignity and independence.

An age-friendly Englewood is  great for people of all ages!
Englewood is Declared "Age-Friendly"

The City of Englewood is now officially designated as an  Age-Friendly City .
During a program on November 27 at BergenPAC, Englewood was accepted
as a member of the AARP-World Health Organization's Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

The Global Age-Friendly Network was developed to encourage communities to prepare for the rapid aging of the U.S. population. The network encourages communities to take action and pay increased attention to the environmental, economic and social features that encourage greater age integration and diversity and create a community that supports residents from the cradle through retirement.

At the program during which Englewood was recognized as a member of the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities are, from left, Charles Cobb, Council-Member-At-Large; Mayor Frank Huttle; AARP-NJ State Director Stephanie Hunsinger; and Janet Sharma, Coordinator of Age-Friendly Englewood.

Care Managers Help Navigate Health Care Maze

Thanks to our friends at
Age-Friendly Teaneck for this insightful article.
Please read and pass on to those who may benefit.

An older resident is ailing and can no longer shower or cook a meal without
help. An exhausted caregiver is reaching the breaking point, but there's little money
to pay for outside help.
In each scenario, the need for elder care assistance is getting desperate - but the  task of trying to find it can feel  like another added burden in what are already unmanageable days.

The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation recently hosted "Build A Village", a public art project  that brought older adults together to explore creating an ideal community.

Professional teaching artist/muralist Dan Fenelon led the series of workshops in Englewood at Bergen Family Center and the Southeast Senior Center for Independent Living (SESCIL).  Participants used their imagination, socialized, and connected with others via the arts to create works that will be displayed in shadow-box windows on Daisy Place, near BergenPAC.

Re-Defining Retirement

The  Bergen Volunteer Center  will have a  Redefining Retirement  "Matchmaker" stationed at the Englewood Public Library on Tuesday, December 11 from 1-3 PM.

The Matchmakers help retirees find volunteer opportunities -- in nonprofits in Englewood or elsewhere in Bergen County -- that use their experience and skills and meet their interests and time availability.

If you can't make it to the Library then, you can check out the online searchable database of volunteer opportunities    here .   You can also contact Redefining Retirement Manager, Louisa Hellegers, at 201.489.9454 X 205 or  [email protected] .

Feeling Young Could Signal a Younger Brain

People who feel younger than their actual age also may have brains that age more slowly, suggests a study published by Harvard online in June.

Englewood is graced with some of the best shops around - to say nothing of the broad range of great restaurants ... and BergenPAC!  So keep it local this holiday season.  Save yourself the headaches of highways and malls!
