Greetings Daves Avenue Families,
Umbrellas, jackets and rain boots….oh my! While we welcome Mother Nature’s bounty, I would like to inform you about a recent update for before school morning rainy day procedures on campus. To support student safety and to provide a calm morning routine, students will now report directly to their classrooms on rainy days rather than the Multi Purpose Room. As a friendly reminder, student supervision begins at 8:00 AM. Thank you for supporting student safety.
Also, I’m thrilled to provide a Principal Cool Cat “Shout Out” to Daves Avenue 5
th
graders who recently participated in the 2018 First Lego League (FLL): Alex Rollins, Brody Tanner, Declan McInerney, Gracin Ting, Nathan Spyker and Nolan Harr. FLL is a well-known robotics program for children ages 9-14. Each year more than 250,000 kids in 85 countries apply science, engineering and math concepts to develop solutions to real-world problems while gaining valuable employment and life skills.
This year’s challenge, “Into Orbit,” encouraged students to explore and innovate in the vast expanse of space. Inspired by the movie The Martian, the boys chose “Galactic Potatoes” as their team name. They met every Sunday since end of August to build and program robots able to solve multiple space related missions. Additionally, they worked on a project on how to live and survive on Mars. The team met with a retired astronaut Rex Waldheim and visited Stanford Student Space Initiatives. They then competed in the FLL North Cal region qualifier tournament. With resilience and persistence, the team received the highest score on that day. Besides successfully passing the qualification and being invited to attend the Silicon Valley District Championship in February 2019, they also won two awards: Robot Design Award and Science Project Award. Way to spread the Cool Cat Spirit in Silicon Valley!

Additionally, a huge shout out to our amazing music teachers and all students who participated in the Los Gatos Holiday parade. What a fun way to kick off the holiday season!
Parents, if you have Cool Cat Shout Outs that you would like to be considered for future publications in The Avenue…please email the content and photos. Finally, I look forward to our first School Site Council (SSC) meeting on December 12, 2018, at 3:00 P.M.

Second Harvest Food Bank is coming!
It’s another exciting year to help support the hunger needs in the Bay Area.
Second Harvest Food Bank will be dropping off numerous barrels to all school locations Wednesday, December 5, 2018 and picked up Tuesday, December 18, 2018. We would love to see them full to the top and this is where we need your help.
Teachers will be sending home Second Harvest food bags with your children to put your donations in. Please drop off non-perishable food donations in barrels located
throughout the school
.
Please consider these most needed foods and avoid donating items packaged in glass:
Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup) 100% Fruit Juices
Tuna/Canned Meat Peanut Butter
Low Sugar Cereals Canned Fruits and Vegetables
This season more than 1 in 10 of our neighbors in need will be turning to Second Harvest Food Bank for a meal. Your support helps connect hungry children, families, and seniors to nutritious food in the neighborhoods where they live, learn, work, and play.
Thank you for your active participation this holiday season!

Safety: The Greatest Gift
As the holidays approach remember to give the gift of safety this season. It is the greatest gift we can give the children of our community.
- Slow down in school zones.
- Be aware of children and families walking and biking to school.
- Make eye contact with pedestrians and cyclists.
- Obey the crossing guard’s directions.
Together we can make a difference. Visit
www.lgsaferoutes.org
for more information and to support the efforts.
