November Students of the Month
Dylan Snyder
Class of 2019

Dylan Snyder plans to major in Biological Sciences with either Pre-Med or research based track at either Seton Hall, Boston College, Tufts, Fordham, Villanova, Rutgers, or TCNJ. Dylan’s favorite class at North Hunterdon was Mrs. Gallo’s AP Biology class. The class really sparked his interest in biology as a major and Mrs. Gallo made the class fun, exciting, and extremely challenging. Dylan is involved in Latin Club, Interact Club, National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and weight room. He is an officer in the Latin Club and is on the Relay for Life committee. Dylan has also been a Special Olympics coach and won a World Language Award in Latin his junior year. Outside of school, Dylan has worked as an assistant at a pediatric dental office for three years. The clinical experience he gained from this work experience has enhanced his interest in a medical career. Dylan has also been at altar server and alter server trainer at Immaculate Conception Church for the last four years. He played CYO Basketball as well. Dylan’s favorite memories in his four years at NHHS are the Jungle at the football games, Latin Club and the trips to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the dissection of cats in Anatomy class, the Relay for Life events, and his Special Olympics coaching experience his junior year. Dylan would like to thank all his wonderful teachers for their support and dedication to teaching.
Chloe Neria
Class of 2019

Chloe Neria has been involved in many extra-curricular activities at North Hunterdon. Chloe is a member of Amnesty International, Environmental Club, Habitat for Humanity, ESL Buddies Club, National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, German Club, and National German Honor Society. Her favorite classes at North were Biology, Anatomy, Human Geo, and Color & Design. Biology was a very engaging class and was something Chloe really enjoyed learning. She really liked to learn about biological processes in nature. In Anatomy, Chloe liked learning about how the body works and thought dissection was really fun. Human Geography had many great stories that Mr. Maginnis told the class; where they learned a lot about cultures from around the world. Besides learning about nature, Chloe’s other passion is learning about languages and cultures. Color and Design was the only art class she took at North even though she is passionate about creating art. In this class, Chloe had fun conversations with new acquaintances and she learned a bit about the fundamentals in art. Next year, Chloe plans to attend Cornell University studying Veterinary Medicine majoring in Biology or Animal Sciences. She will miss North Hunterdon because over the past few years she has learned to open up a little. Chloe is not as afraid to speak up as she was in the past. Also, she has made many new friends and learned a lot about the friends she already had coming in as a freshman.
November Athletes of the Month
Shannon Russell
Class of 2019

Co-captain of the Varsity Volleyball Team, Shannon Russell, helped her team have one of the most successful seasons the team has ever seen. The Lady Lions secured the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championship title for the county, winning the conference with only one loss and they won a section title for Group IV. The girls won a shutout game in two sets against Southern Regional High School in the state finals, bringing home the first state title since 2013. Shannon plays libero and achieved upwards of 300 digs, totaling a career record at more than 400 digs. One of her strongest skills is her ability to read the ball and the hitters. Shannon feels that athleticism can only take you so far, but being able to think one-step ahead and anticipate the next play is what gives an advantage on the court. She has been playing volleyball for seven years for her school teams and four years for the Central Jersey Volleyball Academy Club Team. This 2018 school season is her 11th and final season playing. Shannon does not plan to play at the collegiate level next year, but hopes to participate in an intramural or club team so she can keep doing what she loves. Outside of volleyball, Shannon participates in Interact Club, is a member of National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, and National Social Studies Honor Society. Shannon has been taking drawing classes at North since freshman year and had two pieces in the Hunterdon Art Museum and two pieces in the Clinton Municipal Building. She hopes to incorporate her love of art into her occupational therapy major. Shannon plans to attend college at either Boston or Pittsburgh. She also intends to continue her streak of tripping up the stairs at North, which she has done every semester for the past four years.
Emily Nugent
Class of 2019

Senior Emily Nugent plans to run Cross Country and Track & Field at Syracuse University in the fall. Emily will be studying Health and Exercise Science on a pre-health track. At North, she is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spirit Club, and the German Honor Society. Emily has been running competitively since the eighth grade. She runs cross country and distance for the Lions Track and Field Team. This year, the team won the Group 4 Championship on November 10th, the New Jersey State Championship on November 17th, and the Northeast Regional Championship on November 24th. They won the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championship, the Skyland Conference Championship, and the North II Group 4 Championship for the fourth year in a row. The team is hoping to win the Nike National Championship in Oregon on December 1st. Emily’s interesting fact about herself is she is the oldest of five, having three younger sisters and a younger brother.

North's Got Talent
The North Hunterdon Girl Up Club hosted its 3rd annual North's Got Talent Show on Friday, November 16th at 7:00 pm in the North Hunterdon High School Theatre. A variety of North Hunterdon students shared their unique talents with the North Hunterdon community and the performances included singing, dancing, comedy, and instrumental pieces. The Girl Up club raised money to support education for girls in underprivileged countries around the world, which is the club's main objective. Teacher judges - Mr. Zamora, Ms. Kim, Mrs. Mason, and Mr. Owdij selected the following students as winners: George Kapetanakis, Jack Murry, Andrew Tota, Hunter St. Pierre, and Lexie Miller for their outstanding individual and group vocal performances!

In addition, a group of teachers performed during the show with another "surprise" dance routine, which entertained both students and parents alike. Mr. Kevin Byrne, substitute teacher and Thespian Honors Society Advisor, emceed the event for the 2nd year. Thanks to all those who supported or contributed to the event in any way! North certainly does have talent!

Girls Scouts Gold Award Recipients
Congratulations to seniors, Juliana Gonzalez-Rivas, Ella Fasciano, and Jeel Patel who recently earned their Gold Award from the Girls Scouts. They each created and implemented very different projects to help their community. Juliana created an innovative way to combine fun acting exercises with public speaking lessons, then developed a curriculum to teach these critical skills to reduce a lifetime fear of public speaking. These lessons are continuing in summer programs, in the local schools, and are posted on YouTube and her website  https://summeractinggold.wixsite.com/speakup.

Ella interviewed elders to collect their life stories with the intent to connect students with history. She also created interview templates and lesson plans explaining the importance of primary sources to connect us with our past, and hopes her project will create a more connected community. The database and templates can be found on her website: https://sites.google.com/student.nhvweb.net/spark/home .

He will play in Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall on December 9th.
Presentation on Underage Drinking
The next program in the district's Community Health and Wellness Education Series will be on Current Trends on Underage Drinking and Its Effects on the Brain. This will be presented by Jean Ciullo, Director of Prevention Programs for Prevention Resources, Inc. This program will be held on Thursday, December 6th at 7:00pm in the Voorhees High School Cafeteria.

Underage drinking continues to be an alarming problem in the United States. In fact, adolescents consume 11% of the alcohol consumed across the country. Jean Ciullo will share current statistics on underage drinking and the behaviors and poor decisions that can result. She will provide guidance on how to talk with your teen about drinking, its consequences, managing stress and peer pressure. Lastly, she will discuss how to guide your teen to make healthy choices.

The program is free and open to the general public.

Hour of Code
Computer Science Education Week, December 3-9, 2018

Computer Science Education Week began in 2009 as a “call to action to raise awareness about the need to elevate computer science education at all levels.” Since then, tens of millions of students in over 180 countries now participate in the Hour of Code. Teachers around the globe participate in international professional development opportunities, and advocates make a concerted push for increased support and awareness for computer science education. "The Hour of Code is designed to demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket science—anybody can learn the basics," said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org. "Over 100 million students worldwide have tried an Hour of Code. The demand for relevant 21st-century computer science education crosses all borders and knows no boundaries."

During Computer Science Education Week, NHHS students will participate in the Hour of Code activities either at home or in their classes. Students will log onto https://hourofcode.com/us to try different activities. They will have the opportunity to program a game using Scratch-like drag and drop steps, learn the basics of JavaScript and Python programming languages, or make an app to share. Students can build a galaxy in Star Wars, create a MineCraft adventure, make Anna from Frozen ice skate in different patterns, or help Moana and Maui as they sail through unknown territory across the ocean. Another website that offers computing activities is Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/hourofcode . They are encouraged to complete activities on their own in addition to whatever they do in class. Students will find publications as well as other interesting activities related to Computer Science displayed in the school library.
The U.S. will have 1 million open computing jobs by 2024, according to a recent report by the App Association. In 2013, the Obama Administration issued a similar statistic estimating that there would be 1.4 million computer science jobs even sooner — by 2020 — but fewer than 400,000 people will graduate with the right skills to fill them. Currently, there are 10 more open computer jobs than graduates in the field. Because of this surge in opportunities for computer careers, we have added additional computer classes to our course offerings that students may take during their high school careers. The computer courses that are available for students in the district for the 2019-2020 school year are Introduction to Programming in Java, Introduction to Python Programming, Introduction to Computer Science through Gaming, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, and Data Structures. Our hope is that by participating in the hour of code, students may choose to explore computer science by selecting one or more of the courses we offer.

POW/MIA Empty Chair Dedication
North Hunterdon High School and Rolling Thunder recently had an Empty Chair dedication to honor the 83,000+ servicemen who never returned home from war. The ceremony was held on November 27th in the NHHS Theater. The Chair of Honor will be on permanent display in the Social Studies wing of the school as a remembrance of the POW/MIA who never returned home.
"Let this empty Chair serve as a Memorial to those who have served in the military of our great nation, but have not returned home to us.
They are Prisoners of War and Missing in Action.
America will be forever grateful for their bravery and sacrifice in service to our nation. We will never forget. God Bless America."
Friendship Day
Friendship Day is celebrated every year as an in-school field trip on the half day before Thanksgiving. Friendship Day gives the opportunity for students of all capabilities, backgrounds, and skills to come together to build friendships through team building activities. This year there were over 250 participants in groups of 25-30 students. This was a great day for all to come together to form new friendships and celebrate as one!
