Spring 2019 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Competition

The Center for Latin American Studies at The Ohio State University is running a special Spring 2019 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship competition under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship program. Applications are being accepted for Spring Semester 2019 for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are pursuing a course of study requiring advanced foreign language and area studies training. Eligible languages taught at Ohio State include Portuguese and Quechua, but fellowships may be used for study at other U.S. institutions, to study abroad, or for other languages as approved on a case-by-case basis.

CLAS is Hiring: Outreach Coordinator
|
|
Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, the outreach coordinator position contributes to the international dimension of The Ohio State University by assisting in the designing of activities that increase knowledge and understanding of Latin America on campus and in the community. Activities include but are not limited to conferences, workshops, cultural events and lectures; the primary responsibility is to provide assistance with planning and implementation of such activities.

Tinker Fellow Highlight: Justin Pinta

Tinker Fellow, Justin Pinta, received funds to travel to Loreto, Corrientes, Argentina to carry out fieldwork on Correntinean Guarani, an indigenous language spoken in rural northeastern Argentina. He pursued research regarding the link between this language and local identity, why some speakers are actively maintaining the language while others are abandoning it, and the extent to which these sociolinguistic factors manifest themselves in the degree of language mixture seen between this language and Spanish.
Justin said of his experience, "Overall this trip was highly successful in that it focused the scope of my dissertation and overall PhD progress, expanded Ohio State's international academic presence, increased academic knowledge of this understudied language, and benefited the community of speakers in which I worked by demonstrating international interest in the language and encouraging its role in the local education system."
Justin is a graduate student in the Hispanic Linguistics Ph.D. program at Ohio State.
Tinker Field Research Grants are awarded to graduate students to support pre-dissertation research travel to and within Latin America.
CLAS affiliates will be invited to attend "Tinker Talk" round table events throughout the year that feature the research progress of our Tinker Fellows.

Leonardo Carrizo, a Columbus-based multimedia photojournalist and educator, specializes in visual storytelling. Through his work as a National Geographic Student Expeditions trip leader and with biological researchers in Ecuador and non-profit organizations, he has traveled from Argentina to Iceland documenting the lives and environments he encounters.
Labor and Life features some of Carrizo's most stunning images from Ecuador, arranged as intimate vignettes that speak about the people and their lives on the land.

CLAS is looking for undergraduate and graduate student volunteers for the 2018 ILCLA Symposium, October 25-28, 2018. Volunteer activities included: helping with participant registration, serving as session moderators, and helping guests navigate campus. All volunteers will receive free entry into participant-only symposium activities, including the Opening Reception, film showing, evening dinner, and Closing Luncheon. Matanock to discuss research on post-conflict elections
|
Aila Matanock, assistant professor of political science at University of California-Berkeley, will speak about her book,
Electing Peace: From Civil Conflict to Political Participation,
on Tuesday (9/25) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Drawing on draws on worldwide cross-national data, case studies in Central America, and interviews with representatives of all sides of the conflicts, the book examines how former combatants transition to political parties in post-conflict elections.

and Indiana University Press, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will host its second international conference in September 2018. Through the research of fifteen fellows and an
ongoing book series, Framing the Global continues to carve out a vital intellectual space for
critical and grounded global studies. The Framing the Global conference will
explore new analytical frameworks for global studies as well as
innovative pedagogy for the field.
