In The Woods Emergency Life Flight
Seminar presented at the OLC
This seminar will cover when to call for a Life Flight transport, how to set up the landing zone, loading procedures, and treatment to provide to the injured.

This very important topic will be presented on Friday, February 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the south meeting room of the exhibit hall.

The classroom portion of this seminar features a short PowerPoint presentation, followed by an interactive round-table discussion.

The focus of the seminar will be on caring for the injured prior to Life Flight Network’s arrival, setting up a landing zone, preparing the patient for transport, and on-scene boarding responsibilities.

The seminar will be presented by Tony J. Speziale, Life Flight Network Customer Service/Base Manager, responsible for Newport and Cottage Grove. Seziale began his fire service career as a volunteer in Spokane, WA in 2003. In 2009, he hired on as a full-time flight paramedic with Life Flight in Lewiston, ID, He moved to the Oregon coast in 2017 when the Newport base was opened.
In 2012, Life Flight Network signed an agreement to acquire 15 Leonardo AW119Kx “Koala” helicopters. The first of these aircraft went into service during the summer of 2013. The fleet of Koalas has since grown to 21. Operated by Life Flight Network, the Koala reaches speeds of 175 miles per hour and comes equipped with a state-of-the-art Garmin G-1000H cockpit, night vision goggle capability, satellite weather, synthetic vision, and the capacity to transport two patients or a specialty team, with unencumbered full-body access.
The H135 twin-engine helicopters are popular aircraft in the air medical industry. Similar to the Leonardo aircraft, the H135 is capable of transporting a specialty team. The rear patient care compartment is separate from the pilot area. The H135 also has an enclosed tail rotor. All H135s in the fleet are operated by Life Flight Network.
Elementary School Tours at
Oregon Logging Conference
The Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) School Tours, taking place the opening day of the conference, are designed to connect youth to Oregon’s working forests. Oregon Women in Timber, Forests Today & Forever, and the Oregon Logging Conference work together each year to introduce hundreds of 4th and 5th students to forestry in the Northwest.

In 2019, over 800 students from 11 school in six school districts will move through the program. During the last few years a number of urban schools have joined the program, which is exciting because these youth often have the strongest disconnect with the forests. When one Eugene teacher was asked why she brings her students, she said “it is engaging and there is something for everyone interest-wise.” She adds, “I love how logging/forestry connects to STEM skills, it’s so important for students today to see the wide variety of uses for computer science and mathematics.”

The day is a whirlwind of activity with all 800 students moving through the program in just five and a half hours! Each group spends one and a half hours at the OLC, rotating through three stations. First stop is an introduction to careers in the woods, presented by Talk About Trees educators, where students learn about the many jobs available in our forests. Students then break into small groups to meet real-life foresters and learn about ‘tools of the trade’, like how to age a tree with an increment borer. At this stop, students also learn about the resource itself! The final rotation is a tour of the big equipment, where students can see the state-of-art machines and learn how they are used in logging operations.

The OLC School Tours provide a fun and comprehensive look at forestry for our elementary audience. "Our greatest hope is that students, teachers, and chaperones walk away from the program understanding a more about working forests and their importance to individuals and society" said Beth Krisko, Forest today and Forever representative.
Talk About Trees facilitator teaches students about trees and the value of trees and forests in our daily lives.
Students participating in the School Tours are always excited to view the big machines.
Seneca Jones forester, Bill Wynkoop, shows students how to age a tree.
