First Fridays Downtown Redding
Riverfront Playhouse will, once again, participate in First Fridays on May 7 from 5-8 pm. This month we're going to try something new. We'll have live music! The Northern California duo, Honeybee, captures the sounds and feel of Vintage Jazz in its original vibe. Their emphasis is on lyrical melody, dynamic harmony, and smooth rhythm using sweet vocals, violin and guitar. Visit their website and take a listen. We're pretty stoked that they agreed to play for us this month.

We'll also have many of the incredibly talented cast members from Peter Pan there to greet you. Have your picture taken with Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook, Smee and Tiger Lily and meet the director, Kyle Thurmond.
Friday, May 7 from 5-8 pm at Riverfront Playhouse - 1950 California Street
Speaking of Peter Pan...
We hope you've purchased your tickets for Riverfront's virtual production of Peter Pan, streaming May 13-16. With beautiful costumes, clever sets, a wonderful cast of kids ages 9-17, and directed by the amazing Kyle Thurmond, you're in for a magical treat. The cast will transport you to Neverland and the adventures of Peter and Wendy in the comfort of your home.

Thursday, May 13 and Friday, May 14 at 8 pm
Saturday, May 15 at 7 pm
Sunday, May 16 at 2 pm.

Riverfront Playhouse Board of Directors
Riverfront Playhouse not only has a new location, but its board of directors has also gone through many changes this past year too. There is now Emeritus status for board members who have served on the board of directors with distinction for ten or more years, held a leadership role, and made significant contributions to the organization. They may also act as advisors to the board of directors. Mary Forbes, Carol Robeson, Sherron Jackson, Larry Jackson, Lloyd Arnett and Karen Taylor have all given countless hours of their time and energy to Riverfront. The theatre would not be where it is now had we not had their leadership. Most of the current board members have had the privilege of working alongside them and learn from them. We plan to celebrate and honor them when we're able to do it right.
Riverfront also has three new members who joined the board in January. Larry Morgon, Tom Kirschman and Andy Main. The three of them have been involved with Riverfront in one way or another for many years. The contributions they've made before they joined the board were many. We're confident they will continue to work hard for the betterment of Riverfront.
Board member Patty Williams has served since 2003, Pamela Carney since 2015, Ty Bos and Beth Brockman have been on Riverfront's board since 2018.
Darryll Alvey (president), Steve Main (Vice President), Larry Morgon (Vice President) and Ronda Alvey (secretary) make up the officers of the board.
We'd like for you to get to know them a bit better and we'll start by introducing you to them a few at a time.
Mary Forbes - Board Member Emeritus
Mary was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1932 and grew up in the suburb of Webster Groves. She spent most of her summers in Michigan on Stony Lake and Lake Michigan, and several summers attended an American Youth Foundation leadership training camp there. Her college years were spent at Drury University and Central Missouri University, ending with a degree in speech and language. She has two children and two grown grandchildren.
She has lived most of her adult life on the west coast and has lived in Redding since 1963, except for a few years in McCloud. She is retired from the Shasta County Office of Education, where she taught hearing-impaired students and students with communication problems. For the past seven years, she served as a Resource Specialist.
She has been actively involved in numerous community organizations and activities, including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Renaissance Redding, and RAVES Vocal Jazz Festival. For 25 years, she presented a scholarship to deserving Shasta High School students in memory of her daughter, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1985.
Mary's involvement with Riverfront Playhouse began in 1984, and she has served the theater in many ways: acting on stage, doing costumes, serving on the board, and heading the Capital Campaign to build a new theater downtown. Her other activities include travel, reading, knitting, crafts, crossword puzzles, and playing bridge, pinochle, and hand & foot.
Music and travel have always enriched her life. Since her youth, she has sung in choirs and has been fortunate to travel throughout the country and the world.
She feels blessed to live in this beautiful community, full of exceptional caring people, and says her life has been enriched because of her involvement with so many of them.
Andy Main - Board Member Since 2021
Andy Main is the owner of Shasta.com, a Redding, California Internet Service Provider.  Shasta.com was started in January of 1995, and current ownership has been in place since January of 1997.  Andy holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Masters degree in Business from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  Andy believes that for Internet Service Provider businesses to succeed, they must continually innovate with new products and services to keep up with the industry's rapid changes.  Since 2015, the business has focused on developing high-speed Internet services in rural areas of the North State.  A subsidiary, ShastaBeam, has developed towers that “Beam” high-speed Internet into homes and businesses of the North State that cannot otherwise get fast Internet service.  The business services Shasta and Tehama County primarily.   His passions include mountain climbing and tennis.  He has scaled Mt Shasta over 15 times and was a member of a national championship USTA tennis team in 2001.   Andy’s volunteer activities include serving on the board of directors for the Palo Cedro Park, Riverfront Playhouse. He is a member and past president of Rotary East Rotary, a local community services organization.
Pamela Carney - Board Member Since 2015
Pamela Carney has had theatre in her blood since high school. She has performed in live theatre, musical video, and local TV and radio commercials. She came to the Riverfront Playhouse in 1982 performing in “The Mikado.” Her first lead role was in “Picnic,” for which she won the best actress ARPEE for her portrayal of Madge. She has been in several plays at Riverfront, Axiom Repertory Theatre, WE Multimedia Productions, Shasta College and ARTS Theatre. She is a member at large on the Board of Directors for Riverfront.
Pamela is the proud mother of three daughters and the grandmother of three granddaughters. She works at Shasta College as the Transportation Supervisor and for the state of California as a school bus driving instructor. When she is not working or acting in plays, she enjoys family time camping, visiting the ocean, reading books and watching a variety of true crime shows. Pamela is currently rehearsing for her next role at ARTS Theatre in Cottonwood in the play “Beer for Breakfast.”
Pamela is looking forward to retiring within the next few years, at which time she would like to do some world traveling, which she had been looking forward to doing with her late husband, Doug. Doug was a strong supporter of the community, including Riverfront Playhouse and of Pamela’s endeavors of the performing arts. Pamela and Doug could often be found volunteering at the Cypress Avenue Riverfront Playhouse refreshment bar. Pamela is the Concessions Volunteer Coordinator and is looking forward to the opening of a live theatre at the beautiful new Riverfront Playhouse.

Volunteer with Riverfront!
The move to the new downtown location was completed in March 2020 - just as COVID shut everything down. It's been difficult to see this beautiful new theatre sit empty for the past year. Although Riverfront did do a couple of virtual productions, it's just not the same. Greeting audiences as they walk through the door and seeing their smiling faces is what has been missed most. This new theatre is pretty special and what's made it that way is the many volunteers who have been the heart of Riverfront Playhouse for more than 40 years. They're the people who make the theatre experience joyful for everyone. Now that the time to open is drawing near, we're reaching out. The cleaning up and dusting off and final touches are taking place, but there's a lot to do. We're looking for people to help with tech, office duties and electrical. We're going to need bartenders, greeters, ticket takers, and much more. If you can help in any way, please send an email to [email protected] and let us know your interests/skills. Thank you!
