"You don't see God? Love, and you have Him." ~St. Augustine
The readings for this first Sunday of Advent contain promises for peace and fulfillment brought about by the coming of the Lord – first at his birth and then at the end of time when He comes “with power and great glory” (Lk 21:27). We are told during this season to “prepare the way of the Lord” but what practical form does that take? St. Paul gives some specific instructions in the chapter following today’s second reading which, among other things, include “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing” (1 Thes 5:16-17). Seem too simple? It’s easy at this time of year to get so caught up in the craziness of our “worldly” preparations for the day of Christmas, that we lose track of what it means to prepare our hearts. So, keep it simple – spend a few extra minutes in prayer each day or reading scripture or just reflecting in gratitude for the gifts of the Lord.
Our pastor, Fr. Peter recommends praying the Angelus once a day. When you are at Mass this weekend help yourself to one of the prayer cards which has the Angelus on it or one of the devotional booklets available in the back of the church.
On Saturday, December 8th we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This particular feast day causes a lot of confusion (for several reasons) but it is on this day that we commemorate that Mary herself was conceived in her mother's womb free from the stain of original sin . On this day we celebrate God's great love for Mary and for all of us in his power to save us from sin.
Please join us on this Holy Day for Mass on
Friday, December 7th at 4pm and Saturday, December 8th at 8am and 12pm.
Advent is the season for giving to others and bringing blessings to those who need our help. Our Angel Tree is a chance to bring this spirit to those in the community who have asked for our help. Please take a tag from the tree located at the front entrance to the church, purchase the gift listed, wrap it, firmly attach the tag to the gift and return to the tree. Any gift cards should be taken to the parish center. Thank you for your generosity. Questions?? Call Joan Dollard 978-470-1476.
