The South Wake Landfill Citizens Committee meet every six months, during March and September. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
Location update: The next meeting will be held at the new field office at South Wake Waste Management Facilities, 6025 Old Smithfield Rd, Apex, NC 27539.
The South Wake Landfill Citizen Committee was established in 2006 with the purpose of providing:
A forum for neighbors of the landfill to have a voice in its continuing development
A conduit for information between landfill staff and the neighboring community regarding activities at the landfill

The above table shows the average number of trucks per day and the total number of trucks per month tipping waste at the South Wake Landfill, over a six month period, from June 2018 through November 2018.
The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. To request more information about truck statistics and tonnages, please contact us.
Landfill Tours
New Dates Added

Wake County Solid Waste staff provide free tours of the South Wake Landfill to the public and interested groups wanting to learn more about what happens to their garbage. Take a guided tour and learn:
How to reduce waste at home
How to recycle more than you can leave out at the curb
How trash is being turned into energy
What items can be harmful if you put them in the trash
Tours last one hour and participants are required to ride the landfill tour bus. Upcoming public tour dates include:

Christmas Tree Recycling
Wake County residents are encouraged to
recycle their real Christmas trees from Wednesday, December 26, 2018 through Sunday, January 27, 2019. Trees collected will be used to mulch park trails at Harris Lake Park, Crowder Park and Bass Lake Park, among others.
The following Wake County Convenience Centers will accept trees daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.:
Site #1: 10505 Old Stage Road, Garner
Site #2: 6025 Old Smithfield Road, Apex
Site #4: 3600 Yates Mill Pond Road, Raleigh
Site #11: 5051 Wendell Blvd., Wendell
The following County parks will accept trees daily from from 8 a.m. until sunset:
Blue Jay Point County Park, 3200 Pleasant Union Church Rd, Raleigh
Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Dr, New Hill
Lake Crabtree County Park, 1400 Aviation Pkwy, Morrisville
Green Hills County Park, 9300 Deponie Dr, Raleigh

Tree Planting Program Update
Trees Delivered in Fall
Red Cedar (front), Green Giant (middle), Southern Magnolia (back) Trees
The Tree Planting Program provided neighboring homes with more trees in October. Eleven homes have now received trees. More than 30 homes are still eligible for trees, and Wake County Solid Waste Management Division will accept applications again in fall 2019.
If you would like to apply for the next round, keep an eye out for an email from your property manager in September. Trees will be delivered in October.
Up to five large evergreen trees are available for eligible residents. To be eligible residents must:
Live in the Forest Springs sub-division
Own a single family home
Have a backyard that faces north

Odor Control Update
Statistics & Summary
Odor reports received from January 2017 thru November 2018.
Odor control projects recently completed, underway, or scheduled to begin soon include:
The vapor based odor control system was upgraded in October
The odor control system operates at maximum capacity in the evening and early morning of each day
Expansion of the landfill gas collection system was completed in September
The cap and permanent closure of 20 acres of the landfill was completed earlier this year
The working face of the landfill is now in the northern end of the cell, further away from its neighbors to the south

submitting this odor complaint form at the time you first notice the odor. Reporting odors immediately allows us to respond quicker and potentially make changes to operations.

The construction of the new Convenience Center was completed in August. The new Household Hazardous Waste Facility and expansion of the existing Multi-Material Recycling Facility are expected to be completed in January 2019. All facilities are open for business as usual. Its that time of year again, when we experience the arrival of migratory gulls from up north. They start arriving in November of each year and take shelter at the landfill and surrounding area before returning to the Great Lakes in March.
New Trash Pass Program
Restrictions on dual-axle trailers and box trucks
In an effort to reduce the misuse of the Convenience Center program by contractors the use of box trucks and dual-axle trailers have been restricted at Wake County Convenience Centers.
Wake County residents that wish to use a dual-axle trailer or box truck are required to apply online for a free "Trash Pass" from Wake County Solid Waste Management Division, in advance of their visit to the Convenience Center.
Residents who use the Convenience Centers in a personal car, pick-up truck or single-axle trailer, do not require a Trash Pass.
