TOP STORIES
Saint Nicolas Of Myra The  Wonder Worker  Father

Saint Nicholas was born in the Middle East in the fourth century. He grew up to become the bishop of Myra. His hometown was Lycia, near the coast of what is now Turkey. Legends tell of his love for children, his kindness and the miracles that have been attributed to him. The most famous story about Nicholas tells of how he helped three unfortunate young sisters who all had suitors but had no dowries because their father, a poor nobleman, could not raise the money. Because of this, they could not marry
Bishop Nicholas was a shy man and did not like to give money directly, so he thought of a way to give it anonymously. When the first daughter was ready to many, the good bishop tossed a bag of gold into the house at night. Later, when the second daughter prepared to marry, she too received a mysterious bag of gold. When the third daughter prepared to many, the poor nobleman and father of the three girls was determined to find out who had been so generous. So he kept watch and saw the bishop drop another bag of gold into the house.

It has been said that Saint Nicholas climbed on the roof and dropped the third bag of gold down the chimney where it landed in a stocking hung to dry, giving us a reason to hang up Christmas stockings today. When the father saw what had happened, Nicholas begged him to keep the secret, but, of course, the news got out. From then on, whenever anyone received an unexpected gift, they thanked Nicholas.

He was ordained a priest by his uncle. On his way in pilgrimage to the holy land, he was caught in the middle of a terrific storm. Nicholas began praying and calmed the stormy sea. He was ordained a bishop of the city of Myra [Smyrna] upon the death of the presiding bishop. With great zeal he assumed his new position especially he focuses his energies on the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, the widows and the orphans. When the Emperor Licinius resumed the persecutions initiated by Diocletian, Nicholas was arrested and exiled. During his exile, he did not abandon his preaching of the Gospel. With the return of peace, he was restored to his throne. He was present at the council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. On the following year he passed away peacefully and happy. This saint is considered a patron saint not only to sailors but also to children toward whom he had always given special attention. In America, he is often referred to as Santa Claus the equivalent to the Armenian Gaghant Baba (Father New Year). He is considered the national saint of all Russia. His popularity spread to the west when his relics were translated in 1087 A.D. to the city of Ban in Italy where a huge cathedral was built in his name

Women's Guild Thanksgiving Luncheon

On Sunday, November 19, the St. Mary Women's Guild served a sumptuous holiday meal to over 80 guests after Badarak in the church hall. Those who attended enjoyed tastefully decorated tables with fall and harvest themes, the company of their friends and family members of the congregation, and delicious food prepared by our members of the Women's Guild. At the end of the luncheon a beautiful performance was given by Zaven, Edita,  Jirair Kalayjians and Karine Muradyan.

As always, our heartfelt gratitude to the women who organized and hosted this wonderful event and to those who attended.

Advent Bible Study

St. Mary Church held its first Bible Study session on Tuesday, November 20 entitled "The Power of Hope" (Jeremiah 33:14-16).  During this year's Bible Study we take a Journey Through Advent with the Old Testament Prophets. The Christmas story began in the Old Testament. God's nature didn't change, nor did ours, and He had our redemption in mind all the time. The prophets Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Micah all proclaim the Christ that was to come.

The group of 12 people enjoyed the insightful Bible readings and discussion led by Der Hovsep. All parishioners are invited to attend the Bible Study at St. Mary Church to help celebrate the season of Advent and prepare their hearts and mind for Christmas.

The next Bible Study will take place on Tuesday, November 27 and the title of the study  "The Refining Love of God"
(Malachi 2:17-3:5). We hope you will join us at the forthcoming Bible Studies - please refer to the flyer for more information.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS
Oriental Orthodox-Roman Catholic Consultation Meets

Clergy of the Eastern Diocese took part in a meeting of the U.S. Oriental Orthodox-Roman Catholic Consultation on November 7-8. Bishop Howard Hubbard of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop Dionysios Jean Kawak of the Syriac Orthodox Church co-chaired the event at the Bishop Molloy Retreat House in Jamaica, Queens.

This year marked the 40th anniversary of the dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the family of Oriental Orthodox churches: the Armenian, Coptic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Malankara (Indian) churches. Over the past 40 years, participants have annually discussed the centuries-old relations among the churches in the context of theological and pastoral issues facing both traditions, periodically issuing statements of common understanding.

The Armenian Church delegation was led by Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, and included the Rev. Fr. Tateos Abdalian, the Rev. Fr. Diran Bohajian, and Dn. Eric Vozzy.

A significant presentation was made by Catholic Fr. Columba Stewart of the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library in Collegeville, MN. Fr. Columba has spearheaded a project which scans manuscripts from various eastern Christian traditions for online accessibility. The library, found at www.vhmml.org, is invaluable for research and for the preservation of ancient manuscripts which might otherwise suffer physical deterioration.

New Choices Video

In the latest episode of the video series Choices, Fr. Tateos Abdalian reflects on the upcoming season that begins with Thanksgiving and culminates in Christmas.

  BIBLE READING
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inher-itance with me."14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'21 "This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God."22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27 "Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you-you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
(Luke 12:13-31)
