A Message of Gratitude!
16th Annual Workshop on Transforming
Human Dignity and Violent Conflict
Teachers College, Columbia University
Thanks to All!

Warmest Greetings!
"Can We Teach Dignity?"
was a theme that sparked many meaningful conversations and new ideas for action in the world. For those who couldn't travel to New York this year, we hope this message allows you to feel included in this special gathering of scholars, practitioners, and friends of HumanDHS.
Thanks to Evelin Lindner and others, you can now find all of the pictures, videos, abstracts, and workshop materials posted on the
workshop webpage! We warmly invite your
feedback about the webpage, especially if you see anything that needs to be revised or updated.
Thank you!
Please also read about our "Good News Report," recent developments, and new initiatives for the HumanDHS community highlighted at this year's Board of Directors meeting.

Can We Teach Dignity?
Becoming Lifelong Apprentices of Dignity from Childhood throughout All Ages
|
|
This workshop was a special opportunity to explore how we can best deepen, grow, and teach the message of dignity wherever we go. We hope you enjoy this pictorial summary of the highlights. Please see the
website
for more pictures and videos.
Please note: Thank you for kindly letting us know if you would like access to high resolution
versions of Anna Strout's and Evelin's wonderful still photos — available through the end of January. Please also
let us know if you would like any video on the
website to be "unlisted" or kept "private," which means only invited individuals can access that specific video. We will make the changes you request.
Thank you!

The ability to engage in mutually dignifying dialogue is a crucial skill, especially in today's contentious climate of combative debate. Our workshop creates space to exchange ideas on difficult topics and share examples of promising practices through
"Dignilogue
" (Dignity + Dialogue = Dignilogue). These Dignilogues allow participants to build on ideas shared throughout the workshop!
Thanks to everyone who contributed to our Pre-Planned and Co-Created Dignilogues!

From Dignifying Dialogue to
Messages to the World
|
Our Co-Created Dignilogue Sessions were a special opportunity to transform dialogue into messages that can encourage others working in communities and regions around the world.
This year's topics included: international assault prevention; creating circles of courage; violence prevention; "To whom does dignity adhere?"; using dance as a path to dignity; climate change and dignity; movement/improv; dignity as process; teaching resilience; and transcending political humiliation to bring dignity to power.

Don Klein Memorial Lecture
|
We are profoundly fortunate to have the spirit of Don Klein brought into our annual workshop through powerful talks by
Board Director Michael Britton. This year Michael focused on fortifying our courage to address the urgent threat of climate change while coping with an overheated political climate around the world.

Magical Moments of
Awe and Wonder!
|
Art, music, movement, and poetry have become essential experiences energizing the creativity, connections, and collaboration that unfolds at all of our workshops!
We like to think of these spontaneous moments as “micro transformances” adding joy and enlivening the flow of our time together.
We were in awe of the many creative talents and skills shared this year. Thanks to all who contributed to these magical moments of awe and wonder!

Lessons From Our Courageous Friends in the Amazon
|
At our
Public Event, Gaby Saab and Evelin Lindner described their remarkable experiences as conveners, along with Dan Baron, Manoela Souza, and Sandro Ruggeri, of the
33rd HumanDHS Conference in Amazonia, Brazil.
This conference evolved in a highly unique way as a "Dignity Caravan." The Caravan journeyed through the region to meet with and learn from student/activists and indigenous communities, especially those suffering from the agro-industrial exploitation of their lands and from the devastating fires in the rainforest.

Connecting the Workshop with the World
|
Thanks to
Gaby Saab and others, the workshop offered a new way to connect with friends from around the world! Using the texting program WhatsApp, we hosted an electronic Dignilogue group. This group was a continuation of an e-group organized during the Dignity Conference in the Amazon. We are delighted that the group is continuing to engage in conversations while sharing ideas, videos, photos, articles, and more.

Can We Teach Dignity?...Yes, We Can!
|
This workshop generated new insights, new connections, renewed energy, and new possibilities for nurturing dignity in the world. Yes, we can teach dignity! But we can't do it alone. This workshop reminded us that strength and creativity grow from joining together as a mutually supportive community dedicated to dignity.

New Developments for HumanDHS
|
|
The HumanDHS Board of Directors and guests met on December 4th, 2019, to share "
Good News" from the past year and to explore new possibilities for the upcoming year.
Rick Slaven, our treasured director of Dignifunding, reported that we had another successful year of practicing our "extreme lean, green, but not mean" approach to funding our community's efforts. Our approach allows HumanDHS to maintain a uniquely warm relational-organizational climate in which finances support — rather than lead — the development of our conferences and global collaborations.
New Initiative!
Over the years, many members have encouraged HumanDHS to establish an easy way to provide stable, ongoing economic support to Evelin Lindner. Most know that she does not have a salary or fixed income to support her dignity work. Amazingly, she lives on extraordinarily modest resources, typically spontaneous gifts from loving friends and supporters.
In appreciation of those who would like to do more to support Evelin, we have established a secure
Paypal link for HumanDHS members. This is an ideal way for anyone to contribute a small monthly donation to encourage Evelin's endeavors on behalf of cultivating greater dignity in the world. For example, these gifts would make it possible for Evelin to replace her computer — urgently needed — and help offset her monthly expenses.

Highlights of the Annual HumanDHS Board Meeting
— Gaby Saab was invited to become a member of the HumanDHS Board of Directors. She would like to lead and direct the World Dignity University initiative. In addition, she will be exploring funding for this effort.
— Our "
Good News Report" was filled with notes about the articles, publications, and progress of many members of our community throughout the year!
— Board members offered their valuable thoughts and reflections about how HumanDHS can continue its promising way of sustaining a mutually dignifying economic approach as a global nonprofit. The Board considered a number of options, one of them the "New Initiative" you see here on the left.
