Assistance League of Hawaii - October 2018
Transforming Lives - Strengthening Community

Gerri Migita
President

We had a terrific September meeting despite Tropical Storm Olivia's decision to also make her debut. It was so nice to see: new members - Lorimegan Black and Noreen Wang , members we haven't seen for a while - Raynette Scruton and Noelani Lundlum and part-timers - Pat Dixon and Gloria McGhee-Koel . Gloria kindly stepped up and accepted the Grant Chairman's position so I am fortunate to have a full slate. Thank you Gloria!

Six Assistance League members participated in the 40th Annual Hawaii Visitor Industry Charity Walk (HVIC) held in May. Margie Van Swearingen and I attended the award presentation and gladly accepted the grant for Assistance League on September 13. The grants were given out by Mufi Hanneman, President of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association and Glenn Vergara .

September was the month to make a Kokua with Aloha Kala (KWAK) donation to Assistance League of Hawaii at any Foodland or Sack 'n Save Market. Your donations made between September 1 - 30 will receive additional funds from Foodland and Western Union. Thanks to all who have already made their donations.

Operation School Bell ® held its first In-Store Event at Walmart on September 15, 2018. It was a successful event with 170+ students from three elementary and one middle school spending more than $10,000. The smiles on the students were so memorable for the 25 volunteers who helped with the event. It's such a rewarding experience and I encourage all members to come out and join us. Please contact Margie Van Swearingen to volunteer for our next event on October 6th at the Keeaumoku Walmart Store.

We have a new chapter website! Many thanks to Melvin Ah Ching who has been working double-overtime from July to transfer the website to one that is supported by National Assistance League. The website passed the formal review by the National Assistance League Technical Reviewer on September 12th.

Our next Regular Membership Meeting will be at the Hawaii Kai Golf Club on October 10. We will have a short, abbreviated meeting and an interesting guest speaker who will talk about "Laughter". I hope to see you all there! Please remember that you are always welcome to bring guests to any of our regular meetings.

Get Ready to Laugh at our October 10 Meeting

The Assistance League of Hawaii Regular Meeting will be on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the Hawaii Kai Golf Club, Moloka'i Room , located at 8902 Kalanianaole Hwy.

It is an easy drive from both Honolulu and Waimanalo. From Waikiki it is approximately 12 miles to the Club, taking H1 E to Kalanianaole Hwy. Entrance to club is on the left side of the Hwy. and is well-marked with a large sign. The club is approximately halfway between Hanauma Bay and Sea Life Park. There is ample free parking in the lot by the clubhouse. See the map below.

The  meeting will begin at 10.30 AM. In addition to a short business portion of the meeting, Geri Johnson, our own Laughter Leader for Laughter Clubs , will lead us in a Laughter Club session. According to Geri, laughter is known to promote physical health and prevent hardening of the attitudes. She will provide us with a step-by-step program using guided imagery. No jokes are used. Laughter exercises may be vigorous, though you control how much you laugh! Bring your sense of humor, be prepared for a fun morning and be ready to LAUGH!

W e are very excited to have our meeting at this new venue. The chef and restaurant manager have been planning a very special menu for us.

The lunch price is $25.00 per person, tax and tip included. Meal includes coffee or iced tea, beet salad and banana cream pie - both specialties of the chef!

The menu options:

1. Mochiko chicken with rice
2. Hamburger with fries
3. Yakisoba with veggies
4. A main course beet salad can be requested as a vegetarian entrée if requested in advance.

If you did not sign the advance RSVP during the September regular meeting, please RSVP with menu choice on or before October 4, 2018. Final orders must be confirmed with the Hawaii Kai Golf Club by October 5.

RSVP to Helen Taufa'asau: email: coppertaufaasau@hotmail.com or call 728-8420 by October 4th.

Payment is at the door with cash or a check payable to Assistance League of Hawaii for $25.00. We are unable to accept credit cards at the lunches.

Mark your Calendar and we will see you there!

Four Stars Recognized at September Meeting
During the September meeting four stars were awarded to Margie Van Swearingen, Kathy Takemoto, Peggy Monell , and Melvin Ah Ching , who shared their talents and especially their time, stepping up when the need was high.

This definition fits most of our active members. We appreciate, and want to acknowledge, everyone who gives generously of their time and talents.
Star Awards are presented because one or more of your colleagues share extra time and effort in the store or with a project.

To nominate an ALH volunteer for a Star Award please send an email to geri.johnson7@gmail.com with the name of the member and a brief description of their contributions.

Operation Wildlife

The ladies of Operation Wildlife (OWL) began the fall program at Lanakila Elementary School on September 19. We had 36 students from two classes participating during this first OWL visit of the new academic year. The students were very responsive to Myrtle Ching-Rappa's new PowerPoint presentation. It was a successful visit.

Koko Head Elementary was visited on September 24 and Kapunahala Elementary in Kaneohe on September 26. Anyone interested in viewing the program call Kathy Takemoto at 256-1549 so she can let the school know for parking purposes.

Waimea was our first Neighbor Island trip which was from September 24 to the 27. Gerri Migita and Leilani Alcover made that trip.

We welcome new member volunteer Norene Wang who has joined us with OWL. If you would like to come along, just call me at 487-8061. I can answer any questions you might have about Operation Wildlife!

Member Spotlight

Myrtle Ching-Rappa
Meet our Parlimentarian | OWL Member

Myrtle Ching Rappa, a new Assistance League of Hawaii member who joined last May mainly for the Operation Wildlife (OWL) program is also our new Parliamentarian.

In her capacity as an OWL member, Myrtle has redone and updated the new PowerPoint presentation adding animations and videos to it. All the tiger and lion biofacts now have new laminated tags color coded to differentiate the suitcase sets. The first presentation at Lanakila Elementary was done by her being both the speaker and slide show presenter.

When Liz Benton moved to be closer to family (we surely miss her), we lost our Parliamentarian. Luckily, Myrtle stepped up and graciously accepted the position. She's an expert in parliamentary procedure and has corrected us on several motions. She is also an expert with Robert's Rules. Myrtle will be a featured speaker at a workshop on Parliamentary Procedures November 3rd.

Operation School Bell ®
September's Operation School Bell at WalMart Keeaumoku was a huge success!
Many excited students shopped for new school clothes and shoes on Saturday, September 15 at our first Operation School Bell® event of the new academic year. Twenty six Assistance League of Hawaii member volunteers helped 172 students from from Kalihi, Kalihi Waena, Ka'ewai Elementary and Central Middle Schools spend $10,880.00 at Walmart Ke'eaumoku. There were happy students attending school on the next Monday morning, wearing their new school "threads" and proudly showing them off to counselors and teachers.
Thanks to everyone who shared in this effort. Please know that there are many families in the Kalihi community who are very appreciative of Operation School Bell and its goals of helping students succeed in school. You are all a big part of the success.
Looking forward to seeing the following members at Walmart Ke'eaumoku on Sat., Oct. 6, 2018. Gerri, Joan, Shelley Carroll, Cathy, Kathy, Noreen, Karen K., Peggy, Arden, Dot, Betty, Joy, Ellen, Sandy N., Geri, Laurelyn, LaVonne, Karen M., Carol H., Gloria, Leilani, Marty and Nancy .
On Saturday, October 27 we will serve 140 students from Nanaikapono Elementary and Kamaile Academy at the Target store in Kapolei. This will be our first time working with Target, and they are eager to help us reach out to students in their community. Contact Nancy Sparacino if you would like to participate at this In-Store Shopping event.

Margie Van Swearingen
Bylaws

Our Bylaws and Standing Rules Have Been Updated

The current Bylaws have been approved and filed with National. Because we were thorough in making our Bylaws Motion to eliminate Tutu Tutorial as a program and to move it under the umbrella of Operation School Bell, we can make the change in our Standing Rules based on the Bylaws vote to do so. No need to go through the formal process of making the change in the Standing Rules.
(Thanks to Liz Benton for setting these amendments into motion. We sure miss her.)
The amended 2018 Bylaws and 2018 Standing Rules are on the new website for all members to read. There will be hard copies in the office.

Sharon Ehrhorn
Thrift Shop

The daily and monthly totals for the Thrift Shop have been very good due to the dedicated work of downstairs cashiers and the upstairs workers. We closed for 3 days during the Hurricane Lane threat in August.

Please continue to volunteer as much as you can. You can schedule with Nancy Sparacino for downstairs now that she is back from her European vacation.

The Thrift Shop Steering Committee consists of these people: Sharon Ehrhorn, Andrea Cyriacks, Margie Van Swearingen, Nancy Sparacino, Arden Moore, Peggy Monell, and Geno Godinet . You do not have to be on the committee to make suggestions. Just let one of the members know if you have a good idea or suggestion.

Most of the boxes from the Urquhart donation have been emptied. This has been a slow process due to many other donations we receive. So far, around $16,000 has been applied to our mortgage reduction from the generosity of Eileen Urquhart.
