We are releasing this issue just ahead of the MLK Day holiday and there will be no school for students of Monday, January 20. Classes will resume as normal on Tuesday, January 21.
In this issue you will find information on our
Annual Parent Survey. If you have a student at Lake Nona, please take a few moments to complete the survey as the combined results are the basis for our ongoing school improvement efforts. All of the findings are anonymous and the survey does not take much time to complete. Thank you in advance for your time if this applies to your household.
We have shared a lot of information in this issue pertaining to the coming days such as the distribution of report cards on Tuesday as well as looking out a few months. Please take note of anything that might benefit your student.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Lake Nona Middle School is engaged in an ongoing continuous improvement process, of which all stakeholders are a part. We are sending you an invitation to participate in an online survey between the dates of January 15-March 13, 2020 as one method of reaching all stakeholders.
Surveys are a means to systematically engage all our stakeholders in two-way communication. They provide school leaders and teachers a view into the thinking and perceptions of our stakeholders. Careful analysis of the results enriches understanding of areas of strength and effectiveness as well as those areas that possibly need improvement. The survey results will enable our school leaders to measure stakeholders' attitudes and help target improvement strategies focused on student achievement as well as school and system effectiveness.
Taking the survey also will help stakeholders understand the Cognia Standards for Quality Schools and provide a means for learning about what a parent, student or staff member should be looking for in a high quality school system.

Congratulations to our 2020 Spelling Bee Winners!
The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been testing kids' spelling since 1925. Words used to be much easier: in 1932, for example, the winning word was
knack. Today, words have gotten a lot more difficult. The final rounds of the 2019 competition included head-scratchers like allothimorph, auftaktigkeit, and sphaeriid.
Allothimorph: a constituent of a metamorphic rock which, in the new rock, has not changed its original crystal outlines.
Auftaktigkeit: a principle in music; all musical phrases begin on an upbeat.
Sphaeriid: commonly known as pea clams or fingernail claims; freshwater bivalve molluscs.

Congratulations to Manuel Rivera for his participation in the Middle School All-State Honor Band in Tampa!!! Manuel was selected from applicants all over the state to represent Lake Nona Middle School in this prestigious Honor Band. He rehearsed with students from all over the state for 2 ½ days and performed a beautiful concert on Saturday, January 11, 2020.
Congratulations Manuel, we are very proud of you!!!

Two Saturdays ago, our Special Olympics athletes,
Jacob Cantrell and
Reynaldo Fernandez, traveled out to Tavares High School to compete in the Area Games Individual Basketball Skills competition. The athletes are placed into groups based on their previous scores and they compete in Spot Shot shooting, dribbling for control and speed, and passing accuracy. Jacob and Reynaldo showed up excited and ready to do their best and proved it by the improvement in their scores! Jacob placed 1st and Reynaldo placed 2nd in their separate groups.
Thank you to everyone who supported these athletes during the basketball season. We are excited about the next sport, Track & Field!!

Sixth Grade ELA with Ms. Royer and Ms. Summers
In the 6th grade ELA classes of Ms. Royer and Ms. Summers, students are working with the FSA Writing rubric to understand how FSA Writing is assessed, and what is expected in writing to earn an on-target score. To accomplish this goal, students summarized the 3 categories of the rubric on a handout, while looking at the rubric. Then, students turned in the full page rubric, and the teachers gave them 27 puzzle pieces that contained all key information from the rubric. Students worked in collaborative groups to correctly place the puzzle pieces in the correct spot on the rubric board.

Saturday, January 25 at Edgewater High School (9am - 1pm)
"Together Toward Tomorrow" is the first OCPS Parent Academy focused solely on middle and high school families. Workshops center on college-readiness, tips for struggling learners, transition tools, wellness, financial literacy and more. Representatives from colleges and universities, OCPS magnet schools, OCPS teams and community organizations will distribute information during the event's exhibit hall -
workshop and exhibit hall line-up The event is free. A light breakfast and a boxed lunch will be provided -
online registration option.

Each month LNMS has an award program that recognizes outstanding members of our first-class staff. Mr. Rosado, an assistant principal, presented the honors at our January faculty meeting.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
|
Martin Luther King Day is unique among American holidays in that it honors an American who delivered the fulfillment of a core value expressed in the country's founding Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Many don't know that Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. was clearly gifted, skipping two grades in high school and graduating from Morehouse College with a B.A. in 1948, when he was just 19. (He was also a champion on his high school's debate team and was an avid reader.) He chose to follow in his father's footsteps in the ministry and earned a theology doctorate from Boston University. After marrying Coretta Scott, he began full-time pastorship in 1954 at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
In King's most famous "I have a dream" speech, delivered before the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28, 1963, he called for America to rise up and fulfill its spiritual destiny declared 200 years earlier in the Declaration of Independence - that of a self-evident truth "that all men are created equal..."
To that King added an equally timeless truth, that people should not "be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Martin Luther King Day has become one of America's great holidays, unique in beckoning us all to live by honorable principles that include tolerance and empathy.
