Dear Friends of the BABC,

May has been a great month for the BABC office, with many events being launched in the run up to our summer in San Francisco. Move aside rain, we are ready for the fog!

On Tuesday, May 14th we hosted our Young Professionals Happy Hour jointly with the Japan Society Young Professionals Group. It was our first time co-hosting with this great group and we hope it is not the last: In the spirit of international collaborations we will continue to bring to our membership great events with our colleagues representing the global community.

The event took place at BABC's Premier Member, Werqwise and welcomed new and returning attendees to this monthly networking event. Attendees networked throughout the evening as well as tasting excellent wine provided by Business Member Penfolds. You can check out photos from the event here, make sure you sign up for our next Happy Hour on June 11th

On Wednesday, May 29th we launched our Cyber Resiliency & Risk Management event at Corporate Member J.P. Morgan! (To be filled in following this evening's event).

This month has also been a busy time for the BABC office as we launched several of our flagship events, make sure to take note and get them in your calendars!

First up: Our BABC Young Professionals Pub Quiz coming up on June 24th at Harrington's Bar and Grill! Get a team of four together, or register as an individual, get your thinking caps on and start swatting up on your US/UK knowledge! Come along to compete for your national honor and trophy kindly donated by Florin Pensions - we have rounds of questions catering to all interests! As well as a great trophy you have the chance to win amazing prizes from Giants Enterprises, RSM and Robert Walters.

Next is our Young Professionals Summer European Mixer on July 25th at Wilmer Hale in Palo Alto.

Another excellent event co-hosted with the French American Chamber of Commerce and the German American Business Association. Come along to enjoy some drinks and nibbles as you interact with a number of young professionals and those from across the Bay Area.  This event provides you with a great opportunity to converse with others about your careers and businesses as well as share tips on local life.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that we will be co-hosting our second Commonwealth Networking event with Australian American Chamber of Commerce SF, SF Kiwis, British Columbia International Trade and Investment Office

Our launch of this event in April was such a great success and having received very positive feedback, we thought our Commonwealth Networking Series should continue to thrive. This time, we will be hosting our event at the PGA Harding Park 2020 Experience in the Embarcadero Center.

Last but not least, as you will see from our new and renewing member sections further down this newsletter, the BABC community remains as strong and vibrant as ever. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your ever attentive BABC office team if you need anything or have ideas for how we can make your BABC more effective for you.

Best,

From The Consul General's Desk

Dear friends and members of the BABC,

A new month brings new leadership. As many of you will have seen, Prime Minister Theresa May has agreed to step down as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June, she will remain as caretaker until a new leader is elected.

Though I cannot tell you what's next, but I can tell you no matter who comes out on top, the UK continue its work as a partner and leader in addressing challenges we all face.

Just last month, for instance, we launched the International Research and Innovation Strategy (IRIS), which s ets out how we will collaborate internationally to tackle global challenges and support economic growth.
The UK already has a strong track record. We are leading research into addressing global challenges from climate change to infectious diseases. We are also driving technological change by putting science, research and innovation at the heart of our Industrial Strategy , a strategy built on partnerships and with global reach.

We have set four Grand Challenges to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future. We are bringing forward the largest investment in R&D for four decades and we are committed to reaching 2.4% of GDP invested in R&D by 2027 and 3% of GDP in the longer term. This forms one part of our overall offer to researchers, innovators and investors.

With seven key pillars, the IRIS sets out the UK's ambition to be a Global Partner, Bringing Together Talent, a Global Hub for Innovation, Providing a Package of Incentives and Financial Support, a Platform for Future Technologies, a Partner for a Sustainable Future and an Advocate for Better Research Governance, Ethics and Impact.

With established partnerships across leading science and innovations nations such as the US, Japan and middle-income nations built on the success of the Newton Fund ,  IRIS is the perfect opportunity to build new partnerships and coalitions of nations to progress our ambitions and protect what we value.

HM Consul General

May 14th 2019

The BABC Young Professionals Committee were delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to our staple Happy Hour held every 2nd Tuesday of the month. We were very grateful to collaborate with the   Japan Society of California Young Professional Group and broaden our Young Professionals Network across cultures.

We would like to thank everyone that supported the event by coming along. It was great to see so many individuals coming together from a wide array of careers and cultural backgrounds that created informative and engaging discussions around the room!

We were delighted that Edward Lee, Penfolds Hospitality Sales Manager was able to join us in person, providing both insightful wine expertise and pouring from an impressive boa decanter, capturing the attention of all those in attendance.

Courtesy of our Wine Sponsor Penfolds there was a business card drawing for chance to win a 4 person Penfolds Wine Tasting Experience. The lucky winner on the night was Kavya Balaraman, Congratulations!

The Japan Society of California Young Professional Group kindly gave away a second prize of Japan Goodies! Congratulations to Marc Capobianco. This was our firs collaborative event with the Japan Society of California Young Professional Group and given the success of this event we will be looking to see what other opportunities may arise. So make sure to keep an eye out on the  BABC Events Calendar.

We would like to extend special thanks to  Werqwise, who as always made us all very welcome and will be celebrating their 1 Year Anniversary on May 16th! Happy 1 Year Anniversary!

The BABC Happy Hour runs on the customary second Tuesday of every month, so make sure to add this to your calendar! We are delighted that our BABC Happy Hours will continue to be sponsored by world-renowned Australian wine makers,  Penfolds.

So if you are looking to not only expand your bay area network but your wine palette too make sure to register for June's Happy Hour.

We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with BABC Premier Member Werqwise who will be hosting the BABC Young Professionals Happy Hour for the first half of 2019.

Cyber Resiliency & Risk Management - May 29th 2019

On Wednesday May 29th, we hosted our Cyber Resiliency and Risk Management event at Corporate Member J.P. Morgan! Attendees were provided with the  opportunity to mingle and interact with fellow members as well as others involved within cyber security in the Bay Area. As well as this they were able to drink the beautiful wine provided by Business Members Penfolds, before settling down for the panel discussion!

Our panel of Bay Area and Global experts consisted of Kevin Dunn ( NCC Group), Rich Cooper ( Fusion Risk Management), Philip Zender ( Squire Patton Boggs) and Doug Levy all moderated by Brian Solari ( NCC Group). We were invested in the informative conversation created within our panel through the addition of topical questions from our attendees. Those who attended were able to take information surrounding the steps to be taken before, during and after an unplanned event to ensure their organization is resilient and can return to normal while minimizing disruption to the business.

Our thanks go to all of our attendees, our speakers and sponsors, and of course to J.P. Morgan for hosting and providing such delicious food .

US President Donald Trump has made clear: when it comes to leverage, tariffs are king. Since taking office in January 2017, President Trump has made use of several provisions of US law - including Section 301, targeting unfair trade practices, and Section 232, targeting threats to national security - to bring trading partners to the negotiating table. Major developments over the last two weeks could impact global supply chains across a wide range of industries, including the automotive and manufacturing sectors. Our publication summarizes what you need to know now.

LONDON: May 24, 2019: To mark British Airways' centenary this year, the airline has opened its archive collection to the public for the first time to share never-before-seen memories of key moments from its 100-year history. The British Airways Centenary Archive Collection explores moments from the very first international flight with its predecessor airline, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT&T) on August 25, 1919 carrying a journalist, Devonshire cream, leather and several brace of grouse, to the latest images of its brand-new Club Suite.

On 24 May 2019, Prime Minister Theresa May announced her intention to resign as Prime Minister. She will stand down as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June (after President Trump's visit and D-Day commemorations), and as Prime Minister as soon as the Conservative Party has chosen a successor. Her tenure in office had been looking increasingly challenged for some time. The immediate trigger for her resignation was her final attempt to get her Brexit deal done, which included the offer of the possibility of a further referendum. This proved more than her party could accept, and the party would have forced her out of office had she not agreed to resign. Our diverse global team is closely following every twist and turn of Brexit and the political, legal and public policy issues that may influence Brexit or be impacted by it, such as the UK- and EU-US trade talks. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with your questions.
