Learn how the NHS works with a free online course

The King's Fund has set up a free online course about the NHS, covering how the system is structured, how the different services it comprises work together, its performance, and the challenges it faces. The course starts on 15 October and runs for four weeks, with two hours of study per week. FHT Members can gain eight CPD points by completing the course and reflective practice.

FHT member and lead midwife at Morecombe Bay NHS Trust wins Cavell Star award

Jane Tomlinson-Wightman wins award
Jane Tomlinson-Wightman, FHT member and Lead Midwife for Safe Active Birth at University Hospitals of Morecombe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has won a Cavell Star Award for her use of complementary therapy treatments to support staff and patients. Over the past two years, Jane has trained in reflexology, massage and aromatherapy in her spare time and now offers treatments to any member of staff who feels stressed.
Mindfulness improves sleep in fibromyalgia patients

Researchers have conducted the first-ever study focusing on exploring the effects of mindfulness for improving sleep in individuals with fibromyalgia. Results showed that compared to the control group, individuals in the mindfulness group demonstrated significant improvements in their sleep, with beneficial effects maintained at the follow-up three months after the intervention.

New UK health secretary supports plans to increase social prescription

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care recently addressed an audience in Manchester at NHS Expo, supporting plans to dramatically increase social prescription as growing evidence suggests that encouraging patients to lead sociable healthier lives could relieve pressure on the NHS. Dr Michael Dixon, founder of the College of Medicine and a speaker at this year's FHT Conference, welcomes the comments.

FHT contributes to Massage World and Natural Health Magazines

Natural Health and Massage World magazines
Last month, we provided a plant profile on basil for the consumer magazine Natural Health, in which we outline how basil is used in Ayurveda and some of its benefits to health. FHT Vice President Mary Dalgleish has also contributed an article to issue 101 of Massage World magazine on Ayurvedic kansa wand facelift massage. In the article, Mary gives an introduction to the therapy and discusses its key benefits.
