Please join me in welcoming our 167 1L’s, along with our transfer students and returning students this fall. We are off to a great start with a class that comes from over 105 different undergraduate institutions with a multitude of majors including Music, Electrical Engineering, Philosophy, Economics, Biochemistry, Agricultural Science, and Classics. Sixty-six percent of our new students come from outside of Oregon.
Our campus is alive with public events. On September 13 Professor Sarah Krakoff will deliver the Environmental Law Distinguished Visitor Lecture discussing “
The Roots of Environmental Injustice and the limits of Environmental Law”.
You won’t want to miss the Kennedy Lecture on September 25, when we will hear from author and CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. I am sure he will have many insights to share about current and past events in the news.

The Procedure of "IP" will take place on September 28 with some outstanding visiting professors joining our own IP experts, Lydia Loren and Tomás Gómez-Arostegui.

The Procedure of IP
The Business Law Fall Forum, “The Procedure of IP,” will take place from 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28 at the Lewis & Clark Law School campus.
This forum will explore the various ways in which the laws of Civil Procedure and Intellectual Property intersect. Law professors from around the nation will present topics including preclusion in the context of administrative proceedings, the territorial scope of IP claims and remedies generally, equitable estoppel within copyright cases, jury instructions in copyright cases, and the standards for infringement and burdens of proof in copyright cases.
The event is co-sponsored by the Intellectual Property Section of the Oregon State Bar and has applied for 6.0 General MCLE credits through the OSB.
CNN Analyst Jeffrey Toobin To Give Kennedy Lecture September 25
A high-profile legal analyst for CNN and staff writer for The New Yorker, Jeffrey Toobin is one of the country’s most esteemed experts on politics, media and the law and has provided analysis on some of the most provocative and important events of our time. The author of critically acclaimed best sellers, Toobin delved into the historical, political and personal inner workings of the Supreme Court and its justices in his books The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court and The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court.
A graduate and an incoming LL.M. student in Animal Law Studies were instrumental in the successful prosecution of four poachers from a December 2017 incident involving Moga, a protected rhino.
Professor Melissa Powers, who is also the director of the Green Energy Institute, taught in Italy and Korea this summer sharing her knowledge of energy governance, climate change and energy law.
In addition to teaching, Powers spoke at the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium in Glasgow, Scotland on "Effective Energy Governance in an Age of Transition," and in Korea at the Kangwon National University for a workshop on coal energy.
Professor Tomás Gómez-Arostegui spent most of the month of August at the National Archives outside London conducting research, delving into the records of the superior courts of England for an article he is writing on patent litigation in England in the 18th century.
Here he can be seen examining a plea roll from the Court of King’s Bench. Four of his pieces on IP history have already been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court. His research in such far flung places is made possible by the extreme generosity of Kay Kitagawa and Andy Johnson-Laird.
