New Statue Honors Surfer Phil Edwards in Dana Point
The statue sits adjacent another bronze memorial (of Hobie Alter, a surfboard and sailboat innovator who helped revolutionize both sports) at Watermen's Plaza next to the newly developed South Cove community and across from Doheny State Beach. The life-sized sculptures of local surf industry legends are being created by artist Bill Limebrook, who grew up on Beach Road in Dana Point. The plaza is part of the ongoing effort by the city to recognize Dana Point's historical significance to the sport of surfing. There are plans to add more bronze statues in coming months, along with interpretive signs and other art pieces. Monuments at Waterman's Plaza will pay tribute to other surfing influencers, including surfboard maker Dale Velzy, filmmaker Brown, and John Severson, the late founder of Surfer magazine.
