Program: MyGoodDeed (
9/11 Day) is the nonprofit that began and continues to oversee the federally-designated September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance ("9/11 Day"). 9/11 Day is now the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the nation. This year, MyGoodDeed, HandsOn Bay Area, SF-Marin Food Bank, sf.citi, the San Francisco Interfaith Council and SF Veterans Affairs Commission will join together to co-host the second annual "Bay Area Meal Pack for 9/11 Day." This service project held on 9/11 in San Francisco will bring together as many as 2,000 volunteers from leading area employers, faith groups and nonprofits to pack hundreds of thousands of healthy non-perishable meals for Bay Area people in need. The Bay Area Meal Pack for 9/11 Day is one of ten signature 9/11 Day service events scheduled for 2019. Across ten cities, they expect to mobilize more than 15,000 volunteers who will pack over three million meals this year.
Presenters:
Ryan Walls is the Director of Strategic Partnerships at 9/11 Day and leads the fundraising efforts in the eight cities where the Meal Pack for 9/11 Day will occur this year. He has held various fundraising and nonprofit management positions at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and New York Cares in New York City where he lived until 2017. He and his husband live in Oakland. He is a proud member of First Congregational Church of Berkeley, UCC.

Congregation Host Sites and Meal Providers
Episcopal Community Services
Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing
San Francisco Night Ministry
In 1988, the City of San Francisco pleaded for more involvement from religious organizations to help with the growing problem of homelessness. The faith community responded and in doing so created the San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC). For 30 years, the SFIC has hosted the San Francisco Interfaith Winter Shelter. Our partners in this signature program are Episcopal Community Services, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, the San Francisco Night Ministry, four congregation host sites, and over 50 congregations/organizations preparing and serving meals. This collaborative effort has worked to augment existing shelter opportunities during the coldest months of the year (November through March). The San Francisco Interfaith Winter Shelter provides dinner, breakfast and a safe, warm overnight rest for up to 100 homeless men each night. The shelter has become a leading example of interfaith cooperation within the United States and has intentionally encouraged and challenged our growing network of local congregations to open their spaces and their hearts.

Special Announcement - 2019 Bowes Award
URI, the United Religions Initiative, is pleased to announce that the 2019 Bowes Award
will be given to the
URI Interfaith Councils of the Bay Area
and
the Interfaith Center at the Presidio
. The URI Interfaith Councils of the Bay Area include:
The Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County
The Marin Interfaith Council
The San Francisco Interfaith Council
The Silicon Valley Interreligious Council
The Tri-City Interfaith Council
At a time of rising tensions and increased division among people of different beliefs, the
URI Interfaith Councils of the Bay Area
and
the Interfaith Center at the Presidio are beacons of light amidst the shadows of prejudice and discrimination. Each Council brings together members of different belief communities to work on local and global issues of great significance. From homelessness and housing, to disaster relief, to standing up for communities under assault like the Yazidis, to combating hate speech and coming together in solidarity in the face of acts of violence.
The
Bowes Award
was instituted in honor of longtime URI supporter William K. Bowes
by his brother John, and given to Cooperation Circles whose work exemplifies URI's purpose and principles.
The Bowes Award
will be presented during Accelerating Peace: An International Conference
at Stanford University to be held on
June 26 and 27.
Web streaming of the event will be available during the conference and will be accessible at
https://uri.org/peace
