Snowlion Rep is
Theater
Made in Maine

If you love musicals - if you love Mozart and Ben Franklin - if you love men in makeup and wigs and hose - you must see "Mesmerized"!

This world premiere period musical is set in 1777 Vienna - when the Age of Reason was surging in strength, and 'energy healing' was viewed with skepticism and sometimes downright hostility.  The amazing Dr. Mesmer performed amazing cures, but what happened to him as a result is the subject of this gorgeous new show!

BROADWAY WORLD
talks about Snowlion Rep
and "Mesmerized"

Check out the lead article published by BROADWAY WORLD detailing the genesis of this world premiere and all things "Mesmerized"!

FROM THE ARTICLE
"['Mesmerized'] is a fascinating story about a man a couple of centuries ahead of his time."

"['Mesmerized' involves] the intermingling of a personal story and a societal story about someone who is trying to bring about change, where change is unsettling to individuals and society as a whole."

"'Mesmerized' is the biggest musical we've done so far!"

"Mesmerized"
Deep in Rehearsal!

The talented cast and staff are hard at work bringing this world premiere to Maine audiences soon!  The show opens May 3, and the music, dancing, period costumes-set-props, plus elegant staging and stirring acting are all coming together.  Check out these rehearsal shots!

Dr. Mesmer (Alan Forrest McLucas) summons the curative power - animal magnetism - in his hands

The Sensible Men of Vienna congratulate themselves on their wisdom (Bill Vaughan, Zachariah Stern, David Arthur Bachrach, Jesse Reich, Stephen Wallace)

Blind prodigy Theresa Paradies (Rachel Grindle) plays the spinet as her doting/awful parents look on (Kim Gordon, Stephen Wallace)

Dr. Mesmer ( Alan Forrest McLucas, foreground) struggles with nerves as he prepares to "perform" for the Countess (Nancy Durgin) and her courtiers (Kelly Caufield as Anna Mesmer, Mary Johnston Letellier, Aaron Engebreth, Shannon Oliver)

Musical director and pianist Nell Britton deftly accompanies the actors

Mozart (Caleb Streadwick) laments the taste in music of the Viennese, who seem to prefer Hayden

Snowlion Rep is presenting a world premiere musical as the feature show of the season!

(book by Al D'Andrea,
music by Darryl Curry, lyrics by MK Wolfe)

A  concert  performance of this new musical was seen at the first PortFringe,  and the New Maine Times  called it

"a triumphant night of theater"

Set in 1777 Vienna, Mesmerized
is the true story of Dr. Anton Mesmer, now regarded as the father of modern hypnosis, and the scandal that erupted when he restored the sight of the young blind prodigy pianist Theresa Paradies using t he radical curative technique and invisible force he called "animal magnetism."

The show plunges the audience into Mesmer's world at the dawn of the Age of Reason, populated with characters including Mozart, Benjamin Franklin, the Queen Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, and others - all 100% true encounters had by the infamous doctor, presented in dramatic musical theater format (with an ample dose of humor throughout).

The show will be presented at the Portland Ballet Studio Theater May 3-12, 2019.

Mark your calendars for a musical journey back to the 18th Century, in a show that crackles with an "Invisible Fire" (which is what Mesmer called the power he harnessed to effect his cures).
