Multi-National Patrols Boost Pacific Fisheries Surveillance

Multi-national surveillance operations continue to bolster the efforts of Pacific countries to monitor their fisheries.

A regional patrol operation in the South West Pacific involving eleven countries concluded last week with encouraging results.

The eleven day operation, which began 19 May, involved six aircraft and five ships, with 16 police, fisheries and military personnel from seven Forum Fisheries Agency countries. Continue reading here (Source: Radio New Zealand).
CNFC Buys Distant-Water Tuna Fishing Firm

One of China’s largest seafood companies has purchased a distant-water fishing company to expand its Pacific tuna fleet. 

CNFC Overseas Fisheries, the listed arm of state-owned China National Fisheries Corp (CNFC) has announced that it has provisionally bought Zhejiang Feng Hui Distant Water Fishing Co, an operator with seven trawlers, including six longline vessels, and the Feng Hui 9, a squid trawler. Feng Hui also has aquaculture assets and a marine navigation equipment in China, according to its business description at the company registrations office in Zheijiang Province.   Continue reading here (Source: Seafood Source).
State Guarantee of Mozambican Tuna Company Declared Unconstitutional

The State guarantee granted to the debt taken on by the Mozambican Tuna Company (Ematum) was declared unconstitutional by Mozambique’s Constitutional Council, according to an official statement released on Tuesday in Maputo.

The state-owned company controlled by the State Information and Security Service in 2013 took on a loan of US$850 million by issuing eurobonds, in an operation set up by banks Credit Suisse and Russia’s VTB, to buy fishing boats and other equipment. Continue reading here (Source: Macauhub).
Bumble Bee Nudges China Tuna Fleet Toward MSC

The fishery improvement project (FIP) is focused on the fishing practices for Chinese and Chinese Taipei longline albacore and yellowfin tuna vessels .

Bumble Bee Foods, FCF Fishery Company, Clover Leaf Seafoods and Ocean Outcomes said Thursday they are partnering to launch a new longline tuna fishery improvement project (FIP) focused on the fishing practices of approximately 200 Chinese and Chinese Taipei longline albacore and yellowfin tuna fishing vessels in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. TU Banking on Innovation to Spur Growth

SET-listed Thai Union Group Plc (TU), a global seafood conglomerate, aims to innovate for sustainable business growth, increasing the contribution from innovative products to 10% of total revenue within five years.

The company recently launched two innovative products in European markets -- tuna slices and tuna ham made from yellowfin tuna -- in transparent packaging made from 100% recyclable plastic, sealed with easy-to-open foil. Continue reading here ( Source: Bangkok Post).
Tuna Veteran Zuanich Named Alternate IATTC Commissioner

John Zuanich, a tuna sector veteran who retired from Tri Marine last year, has been appointed as an alternate commissioner of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC).
