Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the "fellowship" apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

Ground-breaking New Mountain bike trail at GPMCT
Construction has started on a major new mountain bike trail off the Dead River road. The Penobscot Region of the New England Mountain Bike Association received a second grant for the project this month, this one from the Hancock County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

Those 2 guys on the left, Avery Mornis and Lucas Wardell, started the whole project going back in 2016, when they were engineering students at University of Maine. As their senior project they put together a technical proposal for a series of trails in the Wildlands. Once they heard it was really going to happen, they came back to help, and really got us off to a great start. Avery has already put in many hours on the excavator, taking a busman's holiday from his job building trails in Vermont.

PB & J Drive at Bangor Savings Bank
It’s a sure sign of spring. Peanut butter and jelly jars piling up at Bangor Savings Bank branches. The 8th annual Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive begins May 1 and continues through May 31 at all branches in Maine and New Hampshire.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive began in 2012 to provide food pantries and other hunger prevention programs with a high-protein food item that is often in short supply and high demand. Donations of peanut butter and jelly jars can be dropped off inside any Bangor Savings branch during operating hours.

The donated peanut butter and jelly will be distributed to hunger prevention organizations throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The drive has collected more than 66,000 jars of PB&J during the past seven years, and this year Bangor Savings is hoping to top the record one-year total of 12,645 jars.

“We continue to see the impact of food insecurity across our region,” said Bangor Savings Bank President and CEO Bob Montgomery-Rice. “We are proud to help area food pantries through our Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive each year. We believe that together we can reduce hunger across New England and we’re sincerely grateful for the continued support of our employees, customers and local businesses.”

The bank will contribute an additional two jars for every “selfless selfie” taken by a contributor when they make their donation at a branch. People can email their selfies to [email protected], and the photos will be posted on the Bangor Savings Facebook page to recognize supporters on social media.

And, every time the hashtag #bsbpbj2019 is used on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram during the month of May the bank will donate one more jar to the Drive until the Drive goal is exceeded.

NEWSCENTER Maine is the media partner for the 2019 Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive.

Bucksport Regional Health Center Newsletter
May is High Blood Pressure Education Month.
This is an important awareness tool because high blood pressure has no warning signs but can be deadly. Read more about that on the back page. May is also a month of celebrations. The 6th to the 12th is National Nurses Week, a time to honor and acknowledge the work these dedicated health care professionals do each day. We have a number of nurses here at BRHC and we appreciate each and every one of them.

Also, the 20th anniversary of National Women's Health Week starts on Mother's Day, May 12th, and is celebrated through May 18th. This week is a time for all women to take
a look at their own health. Women tend to put everyone else first and sometimes their own needs are put on the back burner. So what steps can you take for better health? There
is a list of ways to improve your health to the right.

Whispers reminds us that miracles happen. Sometimes they’re so small that it’s possible you don’t even notice them. At other times they make you stop and wonder for a moment before you start to chock them up to coincidence or a figment of your imagination.

The stories in this book are from people who knew better than to make excuses for what they had witnessed, and have agreed to share their experiences with you.

I called these occasional flashes of unexplained events “Glimpses” in my first book on the subject. This time I call them “Whispers.”

No matter their name, people who experience them carry them forever in their hearts and view the world a bit differently because they have caught a “Glimpse” or heard a “Whisper” from the other side of this material world.
