Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory Delayed
The opening of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory will be delayed for several weeks. The observatory's fire suppression system needs to be fully operational before the Maine Department of Transportation can open the observatory to the public. A valve on that fire suppression system failed, so we have ordered a replacement, but the part needs to be specially constructed for us. We hope to be able to open the observatory by Memorial Day weekend.

Your business might be hard to see!
If you’re a brick-and-mortar shop that relies on foot traffic through word-of-mouth alone, you’re missing potential customers that may be visiting and not be aware that you’re there. Maybe you’re using Facebook, Yelp or Google My Business to help get your business noticed? Without a website, you’re giving up control of how potential customers see those search results and know that you are legitimate.

Your business website is a dedicated, established online authority about your business. Without it, a customer searching for your product will see results pointing them to large directory sites which may have incorrect information about your business. If this potential customer does not see a website attached to the search results, they may decide to do business with a local competitor with a website. If you do not have a website, your business is invisible to a huge chunk of your potential audience.

In addition, websites that are not programmed for mobile devices miss out on over 80% of customers who use their mobile device to make purchasing decisions. If someone is searching for your business on a mobile device and if your site is not programmed to be mobile friendly, you will not show up in the search results. Having an easily accessible, mobile friendly web site is an essential part of any marketing plan.

At Scott Design, we design, program, and maintain mobile friendly sites. We offer several affordable web packages to meet the needs of business owners, large and small. We are a Bucksport company, dedicated to meeting local web and marketing needs. If your business does not have a website or your current site is not mobile friendly, contact us and we’ll show you how we can help you be seen.

Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Employees Make Contributions to Local Non-Profits Through 'Casual for a Cause' Program
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is pleased to present donations from its employee-driven charitable giving program, Casual for a Cause. After pooling all contributions from employees and directors, collected during first quarter 2019, and tallying employee votes for non-profit beneficiaries, the following organizations each received a generous gift: Junior Achievement of Maine, Upper Valley Haven in White River Junction, and Capstone Community Action in Vermont.

“Gifts through our Casual for a Cause program truly make a difference in our communities. Our collective support enhances nonprofit community programs, leading to greater economic prosperity for local individuals and families,” said Jack Frost, VP, Director of Community Giving at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. “By simply wearing jeans or less formal business attire on Friday and contributing to Casual for a Cause, our employees are making a big difference in the communities they serve.”

“Junior Achievement of Maine greatly appreciates the generous investment from Bar Harbor Bank & Trust in inspiring and preparing Maine students for strong financial futures through our mentor-led programs,” said Michelle Anderson, President of Junior Achievement of Maine. This gift from Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is directed to Junior Achievement’s programming in the Mid-coast region.

PB & J Drive at Bangor Savings Bank
It’s a sure sign of spring. Peanut butter and jelly jars piling up at Bangor Savings Bank branches. The 8th annual Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive begins May 1 and continues through May 31 at all branches in Maine and New Hampshire.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive began in 2012 to provide food pantries and other hunger prevention programs with a high-protein food item that is often in short supply and high demand. Donations of peanut butter and jelly jars can be dropped off inside any Bangor Savings branch during operating hours.

The donated peanut butter and jelly will be distributed to hunger prevention organizations throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The drive has collected more than 66,000 jars of PB&J during the past seven years, and this year Bangor Savings is hoping to top the record one-year total of 12,645 jars.

“We continue to see the impact of food insecurity across our region,” said Bangor Savings Bank President and CEO Bob Montgomery-Rice. “We are proud to help area food pantries through our Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive each year. We believe that together we can reduce hunger across New England and we’re sincerely grateful for the continued support of our employees, customers and local businesses.”

The bank will contribute an additional two jars for every “selfless selfie” taken by a contributor when they make their donation at a branch. People can email their selfies to socialmedia@bangor.com, and the photos will be posted on the Bangor Savings Facebook page to recognize supporters on social media.

And, every time the hashtag #bsbpbj2019 is used on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram during the month of May the bank will donate one more jar to the Drive until the Drive goal is exceeded.

NEWSCENTER Maine is the media partner for the 2019 Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive.

Bucksport Regional Health Center Newsletter
May is High Blood Pressure Education Month.
This is an important awareness tool because high blood pressure has no warning signs but can be deadly. Read more about that on the back page. May is also a month of celebrations. The 6th to the 12th is National Nurses Week, a time to honor and acknowledge the work these dedicated health care professionals do each day. We have a number of nurses here at BRHC and we appreciate each and every one of them.

Also, the 20th anniversary of National Women's Health Week starts on Mother's Day, May 12th, and is celebrated through May 18th. This week is a time for all women to take
a look at their own health. Women tend to put everyone else first and sometimes their own needs are put on the back burner. So what steps can you take for better health? There
is a list of ways to improve your health to the right.

Whispers reminds us that miracles happen. Sometimes they’re so small that it’s possible you don’t even notice them. At other times they make you stop and wonder for a moment before you start to chock them up to coincidence or a figment of your imagination.

The stories in this book are from people who knew better than to make excuses for what they had witnessed, and have agreed to share their experiences with you.

I called these occasional flashes of unexplained events “Glimpses” in my first book on the subject. This time I call them “Whispers.”

No matter their name, people who experience them carry them forever in their hearts and view the world a bit differently because they have caught a “Glimpse” or heard a “Whisper” from the other side of this material world.

Library Donates Pet Oxygen Masks to Ambulance Service
First responders in these small Waldo County towns have a new set of life-saving oxygen masks especially for pets and other small domestic animals. The masks, which can be used for creatures suffering from smoke inhalation and other toxic exposures, were donated to the Stockton Springs ambulance service on Thursday, May 16, by the Stockton Springs Community Library in recognition of the crew’s participation in three recent blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.

The free screenings were part of the library’s “Access Wellness” health literacy programming, aimed at promoting public access to reliable, non-commercial health information and services. The programming, which also included slide presentations, healthy snacks, library displays and more, was made possible by community volunteers with funding from Healthy Acadia and the National Library of Medicine.

“With the growing use of alternative fuels, the risk of structure fires is ever increasing,” said Charles “Chas” Hare, director of ambulance services for Stockton Springs and Prospect. “And just about everyone these days has a pet. So these masks are a very important addition to our equipment.”

The set of three differently sized oxygen masks will fit anything from a gerbil to a goat, Hare said, and comes complete with tubing and other accessories for use with standard oxygen tanks aboard the two ambulance trucks. One truck is already outfitted with a set of masks for animals, he said, so the second set ensures that both trucks are now prepared to treat pets, small livestock and other creatures in the event of a fire or other emergency.
