THIS WEEK IN APBA

Volume II Issue 26

banner
Good afternoon,

Are there too many home runs in MLB this season?  Is 13 in one game too many?

Where is the 2018 Pro Football card set?  We are proofing the printer's file this week.  Product will be available at the convention and then the following week in the store.  We are offering two sets this year besides the Super Bowl set. The first set is a complete 32 team set with 50 players per team.  This set has 1620 cards.  The other set, which will not be available for the convention, has the 8 division winners.  This set has 400 players and 407 cards.  We are no longer offering the smaller set with generic cards and player ratings or the larger set which carded every player that played in a season.  We are trying to find a "sweet spot" but we know we will never satisfy everyone.

Since the NHL went to a NBA style playoff schedule, one game a week, the 2018-19 NHL set will not be available for the convention.  There is not enough time to get everything done after the Wednesday night game.

Thanks to Steve Skoff, who pre-played the 2019 Stanley Cup finals.  Boston won in six games. Checkout Steve's detailed and informative writeups on Between the Lines and the APBA Game facebook page.

NEW PRODUCTS THIS WEEK

Once again its a World Series week.  We have four new seven game classics and one what-if World Series set.
The new sets are:

If you have ordered the Seaside Golf course, please check it.  If there is an issue, send an email to custsupp@apbagames with a description of your issue.  Thank you

We have processed the convention orders on June 10th.  You can still register for the convention but you may not get a convention T-shirt.

If you are going to purchase product at the convention, please follow these procedures.
Place your order on-line now.  If its a credit card order, we will process the order, charge your card, package it and hold it for you until you register at the convention.
If its a cash order, we will package the order when placed.  You can then pay for it when you register at the convention.

We are making this change to make sure the convention attendees are able to purchase what they want. Last year several folks were disappointed because we were sold out of certain sets.

THIS WEEK IN APBA ("TWIA") RADIO SHOW
APBA sponsors a weekly broadcast offering insights into the game of APBA and players within the APBA community.  The host is John Asalon who offers a extremely professional broadcast.  John's guest this week is: John Herson.  Herson will be discussing the upcoming  new product offerings. Consider this show the  modern version of the old summer mailings.

New shows will be announced on the APBA Home page and by John via Facebook.

We are now using a podcast system.  We hope this makes access to the shows easier for everyone.  Another benefit may be more shows hosted by other members of the APBA Community.

APBA GO

TOURNAMENT REPORT

NATIONAL CONVENTION

The National APBA Convention is upon us as we will all descend on Alpharetta, Georgia from Thursday June 20th through Sunday June 23rd to attend the annual pilgrimage which offers tournaments in APBA Baseball, Football, Hockey, Golf, and yes even Horse Racing as well as several breakout sessions on gaming, scoring, and game modifications. But more importantly, it provides us again with the opportunity to see each other, catch up on the last year, tip a brew or two, share APBA stories, and play a few side games or learn how to play another APBA game. Friendships are the foundation of this great event and I cannot wait to see everyone again. So if you have not signed up yet there is still time to register at the company web site www.apbagames.com and come join us.

APBA LEAGUE INFORMATION

We have received a number of requests asking that BBW and APBA GO players share or post user guidelines to assist those new to these applications.  Accordingly, under the League Match folder in the APBA Delphi Forum Site "Between the Lines" we have set up a thread where individuals or leagues can post items which may be of interest to those beginning to use these applications.

I am pleased to report that this column continues to assist leagues in finding new managers and pairing individuals looking for leagues.  I will be glad to run your league opening, if you contact me at  [email protected] with a brief and concise write-up.  Openings or individuals looking to join leagues are as follows:

June 9th Openings

LABL League Openings - Ken Schulz is considering a restart of an existing cards and dice league but using APBA Go.  There are potentially up to 6 open spots with pre-existing rosters that have some very big names from the 2002 season.  This league would be an 84 game schedule, 2 divisions (1 AL only and 1 NL only), and a small draft prior to the start. If you would be interested in competing in a league using APBA GO Collections to compile stats, please contact Ken at [email protected].

May 19th Openings

KPML League Opening - The KPML has a current managerial opening.  The AIM BBW league is currently playing the 2015 season.  If interested, please contact Gene at [email protected].

UAL Opening - The UAL is an APBA Basic League with optional fielding looking for two managers.  The league has been in existence since 2004 and has 24 teams.  The league applies controls on player usage and a salary cap using actual MLB player salaries for the applicable season.  The 2019 UAL Draft (2018 season) draft is in July and will use the 2018 season (30 cards; No XC's).  The season runs from October through March with April playoffs.  That's about 15 home games a month and the sending of instructions for another 15 road games.  If interested or questions on the league, please contact Larry Wilson at [email protected] for further information.

April 22nd Openings

The General Manager's Baseball League (GMBL) - The GMBL has an immediate opening for a new owner.
THE GMBL is a BBW 5.75 league, and is one of the most challenging APBA franchise/replay league around.  The GMBL is comprised of 28 teams each with 40 man MLB roster and 20 man MiLB roster.  To succeed in GMBL, one must draft and develop talent from the minor leagues, just like real MLB GM's.  Since they are a 28 team league, almost all players on the disk are actually used and play - giving value to those real-life defensive subs and pinch-runners that seldom factor into replay leagues.

The league also has a very rich historical statistics database (founded in 2008), and uses a custom built web draft program to handle their annual drafts.  The open team has some very good young MLB and MiLK talent, including Rougned Odor, Byron Buxton, Nomar Mazara, Eloy Jimenez, AJ Puk, Forrest Whitley, and more.

New League Forming - Joseph Whitbeck is starting a new email league.  A Basic Cards and Dice Retro Keeper League starting with the 1960 season and going backwards through time.  The Summer league will consist of 12 teams and play games from May thru September. The season will consist of 76 games of which each manager playing 38 games.  If interested contact Joe at  [email protected].

March 24th Openings

The Canadian Baseball League Opening - The Canadian Baseball League is a 24-team league that began in 1974, and uses real MLB affiliations.  They play the computer game but without AIM.  They send instructions, or send micromanagers for our road series.  There are managers from the USA and Canada, most of whom have been in the league for 15+ years (several have been participating for 30+ years when it was a cards and dice league).  They recently had a manager unfortunately pass away, and his team is in need of someone to pick up the reins.  The open team is the Philadelphia Phillies.  This team has a lot of solid players: Miles Mikolas, Gerrit Cole, Jack Flaherty, Marco Gonzales, Blake Treinen, Matt Carpenter, Ryan McMahon, Jed Lowrie, Paul DeJong, Stephen Piscotty, Kike Hernandez, Chris Taylor, David Dahl, and more.  If interested, please email Jim at  [email protected].

March 17th Openings

No Limits APBA league - The NLAL is a new league forming.  The NLAL is a different format playing from September to April and is setting up now.  Basic is used for all hitters set to 930 batters faced unless already higher, starting pitchers to 1000 batters faced,  split grades to 700, and relievers to 300, also unless already higher.  The NLAL plans to use AIM control with full injuries.  The experiment is to see if the injury issue will actually control player use.  Injury factors will not be changed for low use but a great card could be susceptible to injuries and thus undependable.  Manager input into actual rules will be welcome as they set up the league. if interested contact Robert at  [email protected]

Player Looking for a Computer League - Individual looking for a computer league opening.  he has played the regular board game for years, but would like to delve into the computer game and get into a league. If you have a league opening please contact the gentlemen at  [email protected].
