Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information—including details on the building of the atomic bomb—to the Soviet government for decades. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical (Tom Hughes); and the devastation of World War II, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. Based on a sensational true story, Red Joan vividly brings to life the conflicts—between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal—of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history. Sophie Cookson costars.

Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory Opening Delayed
Good News: Fort Knox is NOW Open

Bad News:
The opening of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory will be delayed for several weeks. The observatory's fire suppression system needs to be fully operational before the Maine Department of Transportation can open the observatory to the public. A valve on that fire suppression system failed, so we have ordered a replacement, but the part needs to be specially constructed for us. We hope to be able to open the observatory by Memorial Day weekend.

Your business might be hard to see!
If you’re a brick-and-mortar shop that relies on foot traffic through word-of-mouth alone, you’re missing potential customers that may be visiting and not be aware that you’re there. Maybe you’re using Facebook, Yelp or Google My Business to help get your business noticed? Without a website, you’re giving up control of how potential customers see those search results and know that you are legitimate.

Your business website is a dedicated, established online authority about your business. Without it, a customer searching for your product will see results pointing them to large directory sites which may have incorrect information about your business. If this potential customer does not see a website attached to the search results, they may decide to do business with a local competitor with a website. If you do not have a website, your business is invisible to a huge chunk of your potential audience.
In addition, websites that are not programmed for mobile devices miss out on over 80% of customers who use their mobile device to make purchasing decisions. If someone is searching for your business on a mobile device and if your site is not programmed to be mobile friendly, you will not show up in the search results. Having an easily accessible, mobile friendly web site is an essential part of any marketing plan.

At Scott Design, we design, program, and maintain mobile friendly sites. We offer several affordable web packages to meet the needs of business owners, large and small. We are a Bucksport company, dedicated to meeting local web and marketing needs. If your business does not have a website or your current site is not mobile friendly, contact us and we’ll show you how we can help you be seen.

IRS News
IRS celebrates Small Business Week

Below you will find business-related tax information in recognition of this week’s National Small Business Week campaign, sponsored annually by the Small Business Administration and in partnership with the IRS.

The IRS has many online resources to help small business owners and self-employed individuals handle the tax aspects of their business.

Starting May 13 an important change will affect the way the IRS issues employer identification numbers, or EINs.

Business owners and those who are self-employed can avoid a surprise tax bill by making estimated tax payments during the year.

In some cases, tax reform changes that impact depreciation and expensing allow small business owners to write off the cost of certain property more quickly.

Recent tax reform legislation lowered the backup withholding tax rate to 24 percent and the withholding rate that usually applies to bonuses and other supplemental wages to 22 percent. Using the IRS Withholding Calculator can help employees figure their correct withholding amount.

PB & J Drive at Bangor Savings Bank
It’s a sure sign of spring. Peanut butter and jelly jars piling up at Bangor Savings Bank branches. The 8th annual Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive begins May 1 and continues through May 31 at all branches in Maine and New Hampshire.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive began in 2012 to provide food pantries and other hunger prevention programs with a high-protein food item that is often in short supply and high demand. Donations of peanut butter and jelly jars can be dropped off inside any Bangor Savings branch during operating hours.

The donated peanut butter and jelly will be distributed to hunger prevention organizations throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The drive has collected more than 66,000 jars of PB&J during the past seven years, and this year Bangor Savings is hoping to top the record one-year total of 12,645 jars.

“We continue to see the impact of food insecurity across our region,” said Bangor Savings Bank President and CEO Bob Montgomery-Rice. “We are proud to help area food pantries through our Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive each year. We believe that together we can reduce hunger across New England and we’re sincerely grateful for the continued support of our employees, customers and local businesses.”

The bank will contribute an additional two jars for every “selfless selfie” taken by a contributor when they make their donation at a branch. People can email their selfies to [email protected], and the photos will be posted on the Bangor Savings Facebook page to recognize supporters on social media.

And, every time the hashtag #bsbpbj2019 is used on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram during the month of May the bank will donate one more jar to the Drive until the Drive goal is exceeded.

NEWSCENTER Maine is the media partner for the 2019 Bangor Savings Bank Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive.

Bucksport Regional Health Center Newsletter
May is High Blood Pressure Education Month.
This is an important awareness tool because high blood pressure has no warning signs but can be deadly. Read more about that on the back page. May is also a month of celebrations. The 6th to the 12th is National Nurses Week, a time to honor and acknowledge the work these dedicated health care professionals do each day. We have a number of nurses here at BRHC and we appreciate each and every one of them.

Also, the 20th anniversary of National Women's Health Week starts on Mother's Day, May 12th, and is celebrated through May 18th. This week is a time for all women to take
a look at their own health. Women tend to put everyone else first and sometimes their own needs are put on the back burner. So what steps can you take for better health? There
is a list of ways to improve your health to the right.
